नर्माण्युदाररुचिरस्मितशोभितानि हे पार्थ हेऽर्जुन सखे कुरुनन्दनेति । सञ्जल्पितानि नरदेव हृदिस्पृशानि स्मर्तुर्लुठन्ति हृदयं मम माधवस्य ॥ १८ ॥

narmāṇy udāra-rucira-smita-śobhitāni he pārtha he ’rjuna sakhe kuru-nandaneti saṣjalpitāni nara-deva hṛdi-spṛśāni smartur luṭhanti hṛdayaṁ mama mādhavasya

Synonyms

narmāṇi — conversation in jokes ; udāra — talked very frankly ; rucira — pleasing ; smita — śobhitāni — decorated with a smiling face ; he — note of address ; pārtha — O son of Pṛthā ; he — note of address ; arjuna — Arjuna ; sakhe — friend ; kuru — nandana — son of the Kuru dynasty ; iti — and so on ; saṣjalpitāni — such conversation ; nara — deva — O King ; hṛdi — heart ; spṛśāni — touching ; smartuḥ — by remembering them ; luṭhanti — overwhelms ; hṛdayam — heart and soul ; mama — my ; mādhavasya — of Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa) .

Translation

O King! His jokings and frank talks were pleasing and beautifully decorated with smiles. His addresses unto me as “O son of Pṛthā, O friend, O son of the Kuru dynasty,” and all such heartiness are now remembered by me, and thus I am overwhelmed.

O King! On remembering Mādhava’s joking words, splendid with smiles, charm and eloquence, our conversations, which touched the heart, while he addressed me as “Pārtha, Arjuna, friend, joy of Kurus,” my heart becomes agitated.

Commentary (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

The words touched his heart because of their sweet syllables. Luṭhanti stands for loṭhayanti. Not using the causative form is poetic license.
