अहं च तद्ब्रह्मकुले ऊषिवांस्तदुपेक्षया । दिग्देशकालाव्युत्पन्नो बालक: पञ्चहायन: ॥ ८ ॥

Verse text

ahaṁ ca tad-brahma-kule ūṣivāṁs tad-upekṣayā dig-deśa-kālāvyutpanno bālakaḥ paṣca-hāyanaḥ

Synonyms

aham — I ; ca — also ; tat — that ; brahma — kule — in the school of the brāhmaṇas ; ūṣivān — lived ; tat — her ; upekṣayā — being dependent on ; dik — deśa — direction and country ; kāla — time ; avyutpannaḥ — having no experience ; bālakaḥ — a mere child ; paṣca — five ; hāyanaḥ — years old .

Translation

When I was a mere child of five years, I lived in a brāhmaṇa school. I was dependent on my mother’s affection and had no experience of different lands.

Only five years old, inexperienced with time, place and direction, I lived in a brāhmaṇa house, with the belief that she would never leave me.

Commentary (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

Tad-apekṣayā means “with the expectation that she would not give me up.”
