क्‍वाप्यद‍ृष्ट्वान्तर्विपिने वत्सान्पालांश्च विश्ववित् । सर्वं विधिकृतं कृष्ण: सहसावजगाम ह ॥ १७ ॥

kvāpy adṛṣṭvāntar-vipine vatsān pālāṁś ca viśva-vit sarvaṁ vidhi-kṛtaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ sahasāvajagāma ha

Synonyms

kva api anywhere ; adṛṣṭvā not seeing at all ; antaḥ vipine — within the forest ; vatsān the calves ; pālān ca and their caretakers, the cowherd boys ; viśva vit — Kṛṣṇa, who is aware of everything going on throughout the whole cosmic manifestation ; sarvam everything ; vidhi kṛtam — was executed by Brahmā ; kṛṣṇaḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa ; sahasā immediately ; avajagāma ha could understand .

Translation

When Kṛṣṇa was unable to find the calves and their caretakers, the cowherd boys, anywhere in the forest, He could suddenly understand that this was the work of Lord Brahmā.

When Kṛṣṇa was unable to find the calves and their caretakers, the cowherd boys, anywhere in the forest, He could suddenly understand that this was the work of Lord Brahmā. KB 10.13.17 In the form of a cowherd boy, Lord Kṛṣṇa was very little in comparison to Brahmā, but because Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He could immediately understand that all the calves and boys had been stolen by Brahmā. Kṛṣṇa thought, “Brahmā has taken away all the boys and calves. How can I alone return to Vṛndāvana? The mothers will be aggrieved!”

Purport

Although Kṛṣṇa is viśva-vit, the knower of everything happening in the entire cosmic manifestation, as an innocent child He showed ignorance of Brahmā’s actions, although He could immediately understand that these were the doings of Brahmā. This pastime is called brahma-vimohana, the bewilderment of Brahmā. Brahmā was already bewildered by Kṛṣṇa’s activities as an innocent child, and now he would be further bewildered.

This verse show why Krsna began searching further. Though Krsna is omniscient, not seeing the calves in other fields and not seeing the boys on other banks, he began searching. Did Krsna understand the theft at the time of stealing, after the theft or after looking for some time? Without having to think (sahasa), at the very time of the theft, Krsna could understand that it was theft, and that Brahma had done it.

He could not see them in the forest. At noon time, it was impossible that they would return to Vraja without him. Suddenly he understood everything (sarvam). He underetood that Brahmā had bewildered the boys and had taken them away, that Brahmā had disappeared and that Brahmā desired to see his powers. Ha! It was clear. He understood since he was omniscient (viśva-vit), since he was Kṛṣṇa, Svayam Bhagavān. His jñāna-śakti remained on the side without interfering on seeing that Kṛṣṇa was absorbed in pastimes of externally looking for the boys. When the desire appeared in Kṛṣṇa’s mind to find them, the jñāna-śakti then approached him, seeing its opportunity for service. This is because all śaktis of the Lord are dependent on his iccha-śakti (desire śakti).
