तं नर्तुमुद्यतमवेक्ष्य तदा तदीय- गन्धर्वसिद्धमुनिचारणदेववध्व: । प्रीत्या मृदङ्गपणवानकवाद्यगीत- पुष्पोपहारनुतिभि: सहसोपसेदु: ॥ २७ ॥

taṁ nartum udyatam avekṣya tadā tadīya- gandharva-siddha-muni-cāraṇa-deva-vadhvaḥ prītyā mṛdaṅga-paṇavānaka-vādya-gīta- puṣpopahāra-nutibhiḥ sahasopaseduḥ

Synonyms

tam — Him ; nartum — in dancing ; udyatam — engaged ; avekṣya — taking note of ; tadā — then ; tadīya — His servants ; gandharva — siddha — the Gandharvas and Siddhas ; muni — cāraṇa — the sages and the Cāraṇas ; deva — vadhvaḥ — the wives of the demigods ; prītyā — with great pleasure ; mṛdaṅga — paṇava — ānaka — of various kinds of drums ; vādya — with musical accompaniment ; gīta — song ; puṣpa — flowers ; upahāra — other presentations ; nutibhiḥ — and prayers ; sahasā — immediately ; upaseduḥ — arrived .

Translation

Seeing the Lord dancing, His servants in the heavenly planets — the Gandharvas, Siddhas, sages, Cāraṇas and wives of the demigods — immediately arrived there. With great pleasure they began accompanying the Lord’s dancing by playing drums such as mṛdaṅgas, paṇavas and ānakas. They also made offerings of songs, flowers and prayers.

Seeing the Lord dancing, His servants in the heavenly planets—the Gandharvas, Siddhas, sages, Cāraṇas and wives of the demigods—immediately arrived there. With great pleasure they began accompanying the Lord's dancing by playing drums such as mṛdaṅgas, paṇavas and ānakas. They also made offerings of songs, flowers and prayers. KB 10.16.27 Upon seeing this, the denizens of the upper planets showered flowers, beat drums, played different types of flutes and sang various prayers and songs. In this way, all the denizens of heaven, such as the Gandharvas, Siddhas and demigods, became very much pleased.

When the demigods and other residents of higher planetary systems became aware that Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa was personally putting on a wonderful demonstration of the art of dancing, they immediately came to offer their services. Dancing becomes more enjoyable and beautiful to watch when it is accompanied by expert drum-playing, singing and the chanting of prayers. The artistic atmosphere was also enhanced by the showering of a multitude of flowers upon Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who was blissfully engaged in dancing upon the hoods of the Kāliya serpent.

Nartum is an alternative to nartitum, to dance. Krsna began dancing even without instrumental accompaniment by calling out syllables such as "thai thai " himself. The impression given is that he was considering, "We will meet together at some time in the future."

To give him happiness in dancing many instruments were used. These are described. Another version has avetya instead of avekṣya. The meaning is the same. The roots iks and i (ava is added) both mean “to know.” Tadīya refers to the Lord’s associates like Garuḍa. The others in the list are from Svarga. Or the Gandharvas and others in the list can be those residing in Vaikuṇṭha. Cāraṇas served by playing instruments, Gandharvas served by singing. The devatās and their wives served by showering flowers. The Siddhas served by offering various fragrances and perfumed powders. The sages served by offering prayers. The sequence of persons and their services are not corresponding order because Śukadeva was blissful. Or, out of love, everyone performed all other’s services.

The devatās and their wives served by showering flowers. Apsarās also showered flowers since they did not dance while Kṛṣṇa was dancing. In fact it is not stated that any heavenly female danced. The Siddhas served by offering various fragrances and perfumed powders. The sages served by offering prayers. The order of the offerings mentioned in the verse is not the standard order in worship because this was performed out of affection as a sudden worship, in a crowded situation. Or the order is not correct because Śukadeva was blissful. Or, out of love, everyone performed all other’s services.
