Translation
[Resuming his description of Kṛṣṇa’s chastisement of Kāliya, Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued:] Kṛṣṇa rose up out of the lake wearing divine garlands, fragrances and garments, covered with many fine jewels, and decorated with gold. When the cowherds saw Him they all stood up immediately, just like an unconscious person’s senses coming back to life. Filled with great joy, they affectionately embraced Him.

When Kṛṣṇa finally came out of Kāliya’s lake, He was seen by all His friends and relatives on the bank of the Yamunā. He appeared before them nicely decorated, smeared all over with candana pulp, bedecked with valuable jewels and stones, and almost completely covered with gold. The inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, including the cowherd boys and men, the gopīs, Mother Yaśodā, Mahārāja Nanda and all the cows and calves, saw Kṛṣṇa coming from the Yamunā, and it was as though they had recovered their very life. When a person regains his life, naturally he becomes absorbed in pleasure and joyfulness. They each in turn pressed Kṛṣṇa to their chests, and thus they felt a great relief.

This story being completed, there is a return to the main story. Krsna came out of the lake in a special way (vi niskranta). That means he was kicking his feet in the water and unseen to others, was placing his feet upon the heads of other serpents in the water who had been ordered to serve Krsna by Kaliya. If this were not so, his whole body would have again become wet and the description of his garland and cloth would not be appropriate. The boys were endowed like senses (asava) which and regained life in a dead body. Their minds were filled with bliss (pramoda nibhrtatmanah). Gopa here refers to Krsna’s cowherd boy friends, not the adults. Because of their unsteadiness, being boys, they would have embraced Krsna before others.

Having finished the anecdote, Śukadeva returns to the story. He was decorated in bright gold (jambūnada), having been decorated with devotion by the snakes. They saw him rising from the lake in a magnificent way (vi-niṣkrāntam). Until that time they had been stunned with fear. When he came out he walked quickly over the water. The people all rose up together, from being unconscious and stunned, because they had gained their life. The order of meeting the people is described. First he met his friends, since they were situated right on the bank in front. They embraced him.

Having finished the anecdote, Śukadeva returns to the story. Kṛṣṇa means Śyāmasundara or he who was the life of the people of Vraja. He rose from the water in a special way (viniṣkrāntam). He is described with three phrases. He was decorated with attractive gold (jaṁbūnadam). Having him approach (upalabhya) they stood up. Previously they had fallen on the ground fainting. When his fragrance entered their nostrils they recovered their consciousness. They rose suddenly from the ground or woke up from fainting. Because they had fainted, they did not see his dancing with attractive music. Thus they do not speak about it later. “How could they all regain consciousness at the same time?” They got up like life airs rising. The cowherds, generally elder males, embraced Kṛṣṇa many times (abhirebhire) since Yaśodā; and others regained consciousness later.
