सरित्सर:प्रस्रवणोर्मिवायुना कह्लारकुञ्जोत्पलरेणुहारिणा । न विद्यते यत्र वनौकसां दवो निदाघवह्न्यर्कभवोऽतिशाद्वले ॥ ५ ॥

sarit-saraḥ-prasravaṇormi-vāyunā kahlāra-kaṣjotpala-reṇu-hāriṇā na vidyate yatra vanaukasāṁ davo nidāgha-vahny-arka-bhavo ’ti-śādvale

Synonyms

sarit — of the rivers ; saraḥ — and the lakes ; prasravaṇa — (coming into contact with) the currents ; ūrmi — and waves ; vāyunā — by the wind ; kahlāra — kaṣja — utpala — of the kahlāra, kaṣja and utpala lotuses ; reṇu — the pollen ; hāriṇā — which was taking away ; na vidyate — there was not ; yatra — in which ; vana — okasām — for the residents of the forest ; davaḥ — tormenting heat ; nidāgha — of the summer season ; vahni — by forest fires ; arka — and the sun ; bhavaḥ — generated ; ati — śādvale — where there was an abundance of green grass .

Translation

The wind wafting over the waves of the lakes and flowing rivers carried away the pollen of many varieties of lotuses and water lilies and then cooled the entire Vṛndāvana area. Thus the residents there did not suffer from the heat generated by the blazing summer sun and seasonal forest fires. Indeed, Vṛndāvana was abundant with fresh green grass.

The wind wafting over the waves of the lakes and flowing rivers carried away the pollen of many varieties of lotuses and water lilies and then cooled the entire Vṛndāvana area. Thus the residents there did not suffer from the heat generated by the blazing summer sun and seasonal forest fires. Indeed, Vṛndāvana was abundant with fresh green grass. KB 10.18.5-6 The inhabitants of Vṛndāvana were never disturbed by the scorching heat of the sun or the high summer temperatures. The lakes of Vṛndāvana are surrounded by green grasses, and various kinds of lotus flowers bloom there, such as the kahlāra, kaṣja and utpala, and the air blowing in Vṛndāvana carries the aromatic pollen of those lotus flowers. When the particles of water from the waves of the Yamunā, the lakes and the waterfalls touched the bodies of the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, they automatically felt a cooling effect. Therefore they were practically undisturbed by the summer season.

Vrndavana was cool in the summer because of the breezes rising from the waves of the rivers. The winds, which were like thieves stealing unnoticed and silently the pollen from the lotuses, blew gently , full of fragrance, and gave relief from the heat. Though the summer sun usually dries up everything, it did not do so in Vrndavana. Thus the places was full of tender green grass

In Vṛndāvana (yatra) because of the cool wind, there was no excessive heat. That is one reason. Another reason was the green grass. Viṣṇu Purāṇa says: tatas tatrātirukṣo ‘pi garma-kāle dvijottama prāvṛṭ kale ivodbhūtaṁ navaśaṣpaṁ samantataḥ O brāhmaṇa! Though it was very dry in the summer in Vṛndāvana, there was fresh grass growing everywhere as if it were monsoon season. Instead of śāḍvale sometimes śādvale is seen. This is according to the rule naḍaśādāḍ ḍvalāc. (Pāṇini 4.2.88)
