तथा न ते माधव तावका: क्‍वचिद् भ्रश्यन्ति मार्गात्त्वयि बद्धसौहृदा: । त्वयाभिगुप्ता विचरन्ति निर्भया विनायकानीकपमूर्धसु प्रभो ॥ ३३ ॥

tathā na te mādhava tāvakāḥ kvacid bhraśyanti mārgāt tvayi baddha-sauhṛdāḥ tvayābhiguptā vicaranti nirbhayā vināyakānīkapa-mūrdhasu prabho

Translation

O Mādhava, Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord of the goddess of fortune, if devotees completely in love with You sometimes fall from the path of devotion, they do not fall like nondevotees, for You still protect them. Thus they fearlessly traverse the heads of their opponents and continue to progress in devotional service.

O Mādhava, Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord of the goddess of fortune, if devotees completely in love with You sometimes fall from the path of devotion, they do not fall like nondevotees, for You still protect them. Thus they fearlessly traverse the heads of their opponents and continue to progress in devotional service. KB 10.2.33-34 Those who are devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead never fall down like the impersonalists. Even if the devotees fall down, they remain affectionately attached to their Lord. They can meet all kinds of obstacles on the path of devotional service, and freely, without any fear, they can surmount such obstacles. Because of their surrender, they are certain that Kṛṣṇa will always protect them. As it is promised by Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-gītā, “My devotees are never vanquished.” “Our dear Lord,” the demigods continued, “You have appeared in Your original, eternal form of unalloyed goodness for the welfare of all living entities within this material world. Taking advantage of Your appearance, all of them can now very easily understand the nature and form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Persons who belong to the four divisions of the social order (the brahmacārīs, gṛhasthas, vānaprasthas and sannyāsīs) can all take advantage of Your appearance. “Dear Lord, husband of the goddess of fortune, devotees who are dovetailed in Your service do not fall down from their high position like the impersonalists. Being protected by You, the devotees are able to traverse over the heads of many of Māyā’s commanders in chief, who can always put stumbling blocks on the path of liberation. Dear Lord, You appear in Your eternal transcendental form for the benefit of the living entities so that they can see You face to face and offer their worshipful sacrifices by ritualistic performance of the Vedas, mystic meditation and devotional service as recommended in the scriptures.

Devotees generally do not fall down, but if circumstantially they do, the Lord, because of their strong attachment to Him, gives them protection in all circumstances. Thus even if devotees fall down, they are still strong enough to traverse the heads of their enemies. We have actually seen that our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement has many opponents, such as the “deprogrammers,” who instituted a strong legal case against the devotees. We thought that this case would take a long time to settle, but because the devotees were protected by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, we unexpectedly won the case in one day. Thus a case that was expected to continue for years was settled in a day because of the protection of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who has promised in Bhagavad-gītā (9.31) , kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati: “O son of Kuntī, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes.” In history there are many instances of devotees like Citraketu, Indradyumna and Mahārāja Bharata who circumstantially fell down but were still protected. Mahārāja Bharata, for example, because of his attachment to a deer, thought of the deer at the time of death, and therefore in his next life he became a deer ( yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran bhāvaṁ tyajaty ante kalevaram ). Because of protection by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, however, the deer remembered his relationship with the Lord and next took birth in a good brahminical family and performed devotional service ( śucīnāṁ śrīmatāṁ gehe yoga-bhraṣṭo ’bhijāyate ). Similarly, Citraketu fell down and became a demon, Vṛtrāsura, but he too was protected. Thus even if one falls down from the path of bhakti-yoga, one is ultimately saved. If a devotee is strongly situated in devotional service, the Supreme Personality of Godhead has promised to protect him ( kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati ). But even if a devotee circumstantially falls down, he is protected by Mādhava. The word Mādhava is significant. Mā, mother Lakṣmī, the mother of all opulences, is always with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and if a devotee is in touch with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, all the opulences of the Lord are ready to help him. yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama (Bg. 18.78) Wherever there is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, and His devotee Arjuna, Pārtha, there is victory, opulence, extraordinary power and morality. The opulences of a devotee are not a result of karma-kāṇḍa-vicāra. A devotee is always protected by all of the Supreme Lord’s opulences, of which no one can deprive him ( teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham ). Thus a devotee cannot be defeated by any opponents. A devotee, therefore, should not deviate knowingly from the path of devotion. The adherent devotee is assured all protection from the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Why do the jnanis get criticized so heavily? Bharata, Indradyumna and Citraketu, the chief devotees, do not get criticism even though they fell. This verse answers the question. The devotees on the path of bhakti do not fall like the pretenders of liberation—what to speak of giving up the Lord’s lotus feet. Even if they fall, in that state they remain firmly attached to your lotus feet. Though Citraketu, Bharata, and Indradyumna fell, in the bodies of Vrta and others, the prema increased a hundred fold. One should see their fall down as a cause for increasing prema. And their fall is not like the fall of the aspirants for liberation, for even in the fallen state they remain firmly attached to your feet. They remain faithful to the Lord, thinking that their fall has been arranged by the Lord for their own benefit, for the Lord promises that his devotee will never perish. Being thus convinced of the Lord’s protection, they tread over the heads of the devas causing obstacles, that is they conquer over all obstacles. Another meaning can be that the devotes hold on their own heads the feet of the Lord which destroy all obstacles.

Those who worship you, without knowledge of ātmā-tattva, giving up sva-dharma and even committing sins, do not fall. This verse is a contrast to the previous verse. Tathā na (not like that) is similar to saying “You are a fool, but I am not like that.” Or tathā can mean “on the other hand.” Persons who have at some time taken shelter of you (tāvakāḥ) never fall from the path, or if they do, they do not fall again. On the contrary they have achieved firm prema (baddha-sauhrḍāḥ) and therefore are completely (abhi) protected by you. O dearest of Lakṣmī (mādhava)! These devotees automatically possess all wealth. Or Mādhava can mean “O Lord who appeared in the Madhu dynasty!” You are most merciful. O master (prabho)! You are endowed with all śaktis. By the Lord’s powers, the devotees also possess such powers. Or because of having your power from the beginning, even if they disrespect your lotus feet, they do not fall like the jñānīs mentioned in the previous verse. They are bound with prema for you. The devotees move without fear (vicaranti). They ascend to Vaikuṇṭha, making a ladder of the various paths which act as obstacles (vināyakanīkapa). The devotees regret the obstacles occurring within bhakti itself (caused by themselves) and by this they gain the great mercy of the Lord.
