तत्रैका विधृता भर्त्रा भगवन्तं यथाश्रुतम् । हृदोपगुह्य विजहौ देहं कर्मानुबन्धनम् ॥ ३५ ॥

Verse text

tatraikā vidhṛtā bhartrā bhagavantaṁ yathā-śrutam hṛḍopaguhya vijahau dehaṁ karmānubandhanam

Synonyms

Translation

One of the ladies had been forcibly kept back by her husband. When she heard the others describe the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa, she embraced Him within her heart and gave up her material body, the basis of bondage to material activity.

One of the ladies had been forcibly kept back by her husband. When she heard the others describe the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa, she embraced Him within her heart and gave up her material body, the basis of bondage to material activity. KB 10.23.35 One of the brāhmaṇas’ wives, however, who had been forcibly checked from going to see Kṛṣṇa, began to remember Him as she heard of His bodily features. Being completely absorbed in His thought, she gave up her material body conditioned by the laws of nature.

Purport

The lady described here was especially devoted to Lord Kṛṣṇa. Upon giving up her material body, she immediately attained a spiritual body and left the sacrificial arena to join the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

As he is bhagavan, possessor of all powers, in front of him the brahmana woman gave up her material body. But as govinda, her senses (ga) attained him (vindati) for pleasure, unseen by others. That is the significance of the word "api" in this verse. With that food, which was actually insufficient to feed the great number of boys (tena eva annena), he (prabhu--most wealthy and merciful) satisfied them all. The ka in gopakan indicates his merciful attitude towards them. Though he had no desire to eat, he also ate to show mercy to the cowherd boys. That is the significance of svayam ca (he also). He had no desire to eat because he was feeling remorse at having made the brahmanas’ wives break their vows.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Kṛṣṇa did not promise that they would attain him soon just to pacify them. He did it as matter of his definite acceptance of them. An example is given. In the sacrificial arena, one of the wives among them was forcibly held back at the back. She embraced Kṛṣṇa, endowed with all qualities as she had heard from others, in her spiritual body made of prema, giving up all limitations such as fear and pain while thinking, “Protect me, as I have surrendered to you.” Her body attained that status following after the Lord’s body since it became related to him because of her prema for him. She gave up that body bound by karma. The prefix vi indicates that she gave up the material body but not the spiritual body attained by embracing the Lord in prema. The prefix vi also indicates that she did not again take a material body in this world. The body related to her husband was given to her husband and she attained the Lord in her body produced by prema. The Lord says, “Whatever you remember when you die you attain” and “Accordingly as you surrender to me I respond.” (BG 8.6 and 4.11) She attained him in Gokula within Goloka. This was explained in relation to Pūtanā’s liberation and will be described later as well.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Seeing the excellent devotion in those wives even before meeting Kṛṣṇa, the husbands developed respect for their wives. Now one among the wives (and there were more) is described as a typical example to show her excellent bhakti. Or considering the Lord’s statement that soon they would attain him, it should not be considered mere consolation. One of them immediately attained this result. At the place of sacrifice, or among the wives (tatra), one of them was restrained forcibly (vi—dhṛtā), by grabbing her hands and tying her feet. She gave up her body so that she had no more birth (vi—jahau). Why? That body was bound by karma. One cannot attain the Lord with a body dependent on karma. She attained a body of eternity, knowledge and bliss at that moment in Gokula. Srīdhara Svāmī comments that she gave up the body related to her husband and attained the Lord with a spiritual body. In this way the special bhakti of the wives is illustrated.
