Translation (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

When you go there, My dear cowherd boys, simply request some food. Declare to them the name of My elder brother, the Supreme Lord Balarāma, and also My name, and explain that you have been sent by Us. KB 10.23.4 Then Lord Kṛṣṇa warned His friends, “These brāhmaṇas are not Vaiṣṇavas. They cannot even chant Our names, ‘Kṛṣṇa’ and ‘Balarāma.’ They are very busy in chanting the Vedic hymns, although the purpose of Vedic knowledge is to find Me. But because they are not attracted by the names of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, you had better not ask them for anything in My name. Better ask for some charity in the name of Balarāma.” Charity is generally given to high-class brāhmaṇas, but Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma did not appear in a brāhmaṇa family. Balarāma was known as the son of Vasudeva, a kṣatriya, and Kṛṣṇa was known in Vṛndāvana as the son of Nanda Mahārāja, who was a vaiśya. Neither belonged to the brāhmaṇa community. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa considered that the brāhmaṇas engaged in performing sacrifices might not be induced to give charity to a kṣatriya and vaiśya. “But at least if you utter the name of Balarāma, they may prefer to give in charity to a kṣatriya rather than to Me, because I am only a vaiśya.”

Purport

Lord Kṛṣṇa encouraged His boyfriends to request charity without being embarrassed. In case the boys felt they had no right to personally approach such respectable brāhmaṇas, the Lord told them to mention the names of Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, the holy names of God.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

You should ask for rice (yacata), calling out our names. Though they are supposed to be intelligent, they must be woken from deep slumber by calling out our names, calling out Baladeva’s name first. He is more elevated than I, since he is of ksatriya birth. The materialists will give to him out of respect. Even if they give a little, it is acceptable.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

If you are feeling a little shy about this, say that you have been sent by us, not your parents. You should glorify the name of my brother who has great power, who is related to me.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

“As devotees we should not beg for food.” You were sent by us two. Thus you have no fault. “But the followers also are at fault.” By doing kīrtana of our names, the fault will be destroyed. Why? The Lord is full of all powers (bhagavataḥ). He taught a method of begging while chanting the Lord’s names.
