Translation (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
Such being the case, this ritualistic endeavor of yours should be clearly explained to Me. Is it a ceremony based on scriptural injunction, or simply a custom of ordinary society?

Therefore, please let Me know the purpose of the sacrifice you are going to perform. Is it according to Vedic injunction? Or is it simply a popular ceremony? Kindly let Me know in detail about the sacrifice.”
Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
If someone says, "We are performing this after considering very carefully with knowledge," he replies in this verse with another question. "Has the future result (kriya yoga) been considered according to scripture, or according to local custom?"
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Have you considered the future results (kriya-yogaḥ) of your activities (tatra) according to the authority of scriptures? Or have you simply received it as a traditional custom? You should explain this with proof. This should be done after I have asked the question (tāvat). By these words he shows his learning so that they will accept his statements.
Purport (Sanatana Goswami)
“Our ancestors have done this sacrifice. What is the use of deliberating at this time?” Yes, how did this worship start? Having you considered these actions in terms of getting results (tatra). Or have you considered these actions according to knowledge or ignorance of scripture? If it is based on scripture, it can be given up according to scripture and if it is local custom, it can be given up according to local rules. This shows Kṛṣṇa’s wisdom so that they would accept his statements. Please explain this with good logic (sādhu).
