Translation
Trembling from the distress brought about by the severe rainfall, and trying to cover their heads and calves with their own bodies, the cows approached the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The cows especially, being much aggrieved from the heavy rain, bowed down their heads, and taking their calves underneath their bodies, they approached the Supreme Personality of Godhead to take shelter of His lotus feet.

With great effort they covered their heads and children. “How did their knowledge of doing this arise?” They developed this realization of compassion because of the inconceivable qualities in the Lord (bhagavataḥ). They came very close (upāyayuḥ) to Kṛṣṇa.

With great effort they covered their heads and their children. Another version has prasādhya with the same meaning. They took shelter of Kṛṣṇa’s feet, approaching very close, out of affection and with a desire to protect him. This would reveal his unlimited powers in protecting his devotees and his affection for the miserable. Bhagavataḥ means “of the lord who is the object of great affection.”
