सोऽम्भस्यलं युवतिभि: परिषिच्यमान: प्रेम्णेक्षित: प्रहसतीभिरितस्ततोऽङ्ग । वैमानिकै: कुसुमवर्षिभिरीड्यमानो रेमे स्वयं स्वरतिरत्र गजेन्द्रलील: ॥ २३ ॥

so ’mbhasy alaṁ yuvatibhiḥ pariṣicyamānaḥ premṇekṣitaḥ prahasatībhir itas tato ’ṅga vaimānikaiḥ kusuma-varṣibhir īdyamāno reme svayaṁ sva-ratir atra gajendra-līlaḥ

saḥ — He ; ambhasi — in the water ; alam — very much ; yuvatibhiḥ — by the girls ; pariṣicyamānaḥ — being splashed ; premṇā — with love ; īkṣitaḥ — glanced upon ; prahasatībhiḥ — by them, who were laughing ; itaḥ tataḥ — here and there ; aṅga — my dear King ; vaimānikaiḥ — by those traveling in their airplanes ; kusuma — flowers ; varṣibhiḥ — who were raining down ; īḍyamānaḥ — being worshiped ; reme — enjoyed ; svayam — personally ; sva — ratiḥ — satisfied within Himself ; atra — here ; gaja — indra — of a king of the elephants ; līlaḥ — whose playing .

Translation

My dear King, in the water Kṛṣṇa found Himself being splashed on all sides by the laughing gopīs, who looked at Him with love. As the demigods worshiped Him by showering flowers from their airplanes, the self-satisfied Lord took pleasure in playing like the king of the elephants.

My dear King, in the water Kṛṣṇa found Himself being splashed on all sides by the laughing gopīs, who looked at Him with love. As the demigods worshiped Him by showering flowers from their airplanes, the self-satisfied Lord took pleasure in playing like the king of the elephants. KB 10.33.23 The gopīs began to splash water on the body of Kṛṣṇa, all the while smiling, and Kṛṣṇa enjoyed this. As Kṛṣṇa was taking pleasure in the joking words and splashing water, the demigods in the heavenly planets showered flowers. The demigods thus praised the superexcellent rāsa dance of Kṛṣṇa, the supreme enjoyer, and His pastimes with the gopīs in the water of the Yamunā.

There are two versions premneksita glancing with prema, and premnoksita, moistened with prema. Being splashed with water by the loudly laughing gopis, who gazed at with love, or who moistened him with love, he, the treasure of pastimes (sva ratih), worshipped by showers of flowers from the devatas, enjoyed with them.

He sprinkled with water by the young women (yuvatibhiḥ), who were expert at this, absorbed in the rasa of playing in the water. He was sprinkled with water, in the water, from all directions (itas tataḥ), even though they looked at him with prema. Premṇokṣitaḥ (showered with prema) is another version. This indicates that internally and externally he was absorbed in that play. The gopīs laughed loudly because of hāsya-rasa, while he enjoyed (reme). They also were internally and externally absorbed in this play. In this way he enjoyed within himself (sva-ratiḥ). How is this described? He was like the king of the elephants in his pastimes, a person whose pastimes are full of power. How is this described? He was praised with showers of flowers from airplanes. This means he had evident, supreme glory to be praised at all times everywhere. This phrase cannot be explained otherwise, because the devatās were not qualified for this pastime. Śukadeva calls out to Parīkṣit in joy (aṅga). Or, sva-ratiḥ can mean “he had attachment for his own gopīs (sva).” Thus even if he was victorious in the games, they were satisfied with his victory. Or, “Please describe the water pastimes in detail.” He had extraordinary (sva) pastimes (ratiḥ). The pastimes are impossible to describe without giving an example.
