उपगीयमानौ ललितं स्त्रीजनैर्बद्धसौहृदै: । स्वलङ्कृतानुलिप्ताङ्गौ स्रग्विनौ विरजोऽम्बरौ ॥ २१ ॥

Verse text

upagīyamānau lalitaṁ strī-janair baddha-sauhṛdaiḥ sv-alaṅkṛtānuliptāṅgau sragvinau virajo-’mbarau

Synonyms

upagīyamānau — Their glories being sung ; lalitam — charmingly ; strī — janaiḥ — by the womenfolk ; baddha — bound ; sauhṛdaiḥ — in affection for Them ; su — alaṅkṛta — finely decorated ; anulipta — and anointed with (sandalwood pulp) ; aṅgau — whose limbs ; srak — vinau — wearing flower garlands ; virajaḥ — spotless ; ambarau — whose garments .

Translation

Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma wore flower garlands and spotless garments, and Their limbs were beautifully decorated and anointed. The women sang Their glories in a charming way, bound to Them by affection.

KB 10.34.21 The young damsels of Vraja were very nicely dressed and anointed with pulp of sandalwood and decorated with flowers.

After observing the vows of Siva ratri, on the night of the purnima full of moonlight, Balarama and Krsna and other friends, standing amongst the gopis, began to observe holika pastimes.

The pastime is described in three verses. The two were described by the gopīs using songs suitable for Horikā, attractive with joyful singing and arrangements (lalitam) since they were bound by affection to the two boys. Balarāma had separate gopīs during this pastime. This has been indicated previously. Gopyo ’ntareṇa bhujayor api yat-spṛhā śrīḥ: you have embraced the young cowherd women between your two arms—a favor hankered after by the goddess of fortune herself. (SB 10.15.8) It will be stated in verse 24 that hearing the song the gopīs fainted. The two sang songs and the two separate groups of gopīs fainted. However in describing the pastime because of the crowds on that occasion, the descriptions of the two boys’ separate pastimes are merged together, though the two actually had separate pastimes.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Three verses describe the event. They were praised by women, who were expert at singing. Their singing is described in SB 10.33.9. They sang softly (lalitam), very close to them. Both were praised, since Balarāma’s activities assisted Kṛṣṇa. “Why did they praise Balarāma?” They had strong friendship with Kṛṣṇa. Or they were bound by the chains of prema. By that affection there could be no fault in their soft singing. The two were beautifully ornamented and smeared with sandalwood. They wore garlands and spotless cloth. The night was beautiful.
