तस्योत्सङ्गे घनश्यामं पीतकौशेयवाससम् । पुरुषं चतुर्भुजं शान्तं पद्मपत्रारुणेक्षणम् ॥ ४६ ॥ चारुप्रसन्नवदनं चारुहासनिरीक्षणम् । सुभ्रून्नसं चारुकर्णं सुकपोलारुणाधरम् ॥ ४७ ॥ प्रलम्बपीवरभुजं तुङ्गांसोर:स्थलश्रियम् । कम्बुकण्ठं निम्ननाभिं वलिमत्पल्लवोदरम् ॥ ४८ ॥

tasyotsaṅge ghana-śyāmaṁ pīta-kauśeya-vāsasam puruṣaṁ catur-bhujaṁ śāntam padma-patrāruṇekṣaṇam cāru-prasanna-vadanaṁ cāru-hāsa-nirīkṣaṇam su-bhrūnnasaṁ caru-karṇaṁ su-kapolāruṇādharam pralamba-pīvara-bhujaṁ tuṅgāṁsoraḥ-sthala-śriyam kambu-kaṇṭhaṁ nimna-nābhiṁ valimat-pallavodaram

Translation

Akrūra then saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead lying peacefully on the lap of Lord Ananta Śeṣa. The complexion of that Supreme Person was like a dark-blue cloud. He wore yellow garments and had four arms and reddish lotus-petal eyes. His face looked attractive and cheerful with its smiling, endearing glance and lovely eyebrows, its raised nose and finely formed ears, and its beautiful cheeks and reddish lips. The Lord’s broad shoulders and expansive chest were beautiful, and His arms long and stout. His neck resembled a conchshell, His navel was deep, and His abdomen bore lines like those on a banyan leaf.

Akrūra then saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead lying peacefully on the lap of Lord Ananta Śeṣa. The complexion of that Supreme Person was like a dark-blue cloud. He wore yellow garments and had four arms and reddish lotus-petal eyes. His face looked attractive and cheerful with its smiling, endearing glance and lovely eyebrows, its raised nose and finely formed ears, and its beautiful cheeks and reddish lips. The Lord's broad shoulders and expansive chest were beautiful, and His arms long and stout. His neck resembled a conchshell, His navel was deep, and His abdomen bore lines like those on a banyan leaf KB 10.39.46-48 On the coiled lap of Śeṣa Nāga, Kṛṣṇa was sitting very soberly, with four hands. His eyes were like the reddish petals of the lotus flower. In other words, after returning to the Yamunā, Akrūra saw Balarāma turned into Śeṣa Nāga and Kṛṣṇa turned into Mahā-Viṣṇu. He saw the four-handed Supreme Personality of Godhead, smiling very beautifully. The Lord was very pleasing to all and was looking toward everyone with a merciful glance. He appeared beautiful with His raised nose, broad forehead, attractive ears and reddish lips. His arms, reaching to the knees, were very strongly built. His shoulders were high, His chest was very broad, and His neck was shaped like a conchshell. His navel was very deep, and His abdomen was marked with three lines.

In these verses Krsna’s amsa Narayana is described. From the beginning of the forty sixth verse until the verb (vilokya) in the fifty sixth verse, there is one sentence. He had high shoulders and shining chest, crease lines on his skin (balimat), and stomach shaped like an asvattha leaf. He had large buttocks, thighs and forearms (karabha), and slightly raised ankles. His lotus feet had tender toes.

Twelve verses describe the Lord lying on Ananta comfortably. Hari-vaṁśa says: tasyotsaṇge ghanaśyāmam śrīvatsācchāditodaram pītāmbaradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ sūpaviṣṭaṁ dadarśa ha He saw on the lap of Ananta. He had a dark complexion, and was seated comfortably, wearing yellow cloth, bearing the Śrīvatsa mark on his chest. He was seated on Ananta’s coils. This is a form of the puruṣa who acts as antaryāmī of the universe (Garbodhakaśāyī). This is made clear later: nato ’smy ahaṁ tvākhila-hetu-hetuṁ nārāyaṇaṁ pūruṣam ādyam avyayam yan-nābhi-jātād aravinda-koṣād brahmāvirāsīd yata eṣa lokaḥ I bow down to you, the cause of all causes, the original and inexhaustible Supreme Person, Nārāyaṇa. From the whorl of the lotus born from your navel, Brahmā appeared, and by his agency this universe has come into being. SB 10.40.1 The form gave bliss to the eyes and mind (śāntam) since it was devoid of ferocity and other negative qualities. His eyes were pink at the edges like lotus petals. The words cāru and su are repeated to indicate that whatever he saw he realized in the most intense fashion. Śriyam means the golden line of Lakṣmī. This will be explained later as a form of his beloved. His throat was marked with three lines.

He saw the Lord sitting happily on the lap of Ananta. tasyotsaṇge ghanaśyāmam śrīvatsācchāditodaram pītāmbaradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ sūpaviṣṭaṁ dadarśa ha He saw the Lord on the lap of Ananta. He had a dark complexion, and was seated comfortably, wearing yellow cloth, bearing the Śrīvatsa mark on his chest. Hari-vaṁśa pradhāna-puruṣāv ādyau jagad-dhetū jagat-patī avatīrṇau jagaty-arthe svāṁśena bala-keśavau They were the primeval Lords, the masters and original causes of the universes, Keśava and Balarāma who had for the welfare of the earth now descended with their expansions. SB 10.38.32 Previously the brothers were considered equal, but now they are distinguished. Kṛṣṇa is distinguised by his mercy and other qualities. Or the display shows Kṛṣṇa’s great powers as Nārāyaṇa, the cause of the universe. He had a human form (puruṣam), which was attractive to the mind (śānṭam). His eyes were like lotus petals, pink at the edges. His face was beautiful and pleased (cāru). That he was showing his beautiful smile. Or he had a pleasing smile and glance. The words cāru and su are repeated to indicate the indescribable nature of his beauty. His arms were well shaped. He had Lakṣmī or beauty on his chest. His throat had three lines like a conch.
