अहो अस्मदभूद् भूरि पित्रोर्वृजिनमार्ययो: । यद्धेतो: पुत्रमरणं यद्धेतोर्बन्धनं तयो: ॥ ६ ॥

Verse text

aho asmad abhūd bhūri pitror vṛjinam āryayoḥ yad-dhetoḥ putra-maraṇaṁ yad-dhetor bandhanaṁ tayoḥ

Synonyms

aho ah ; asmat because of Me ; abhūt there was ; bhūri great ; pitroḥ for My parents ; vṛjinam suffering ; āryayoḥ for the offenseless ones ; yat hetoḥ — because of whom ; putra of their sons ; maraṇam the death ; yat hetoḥ — because of whom ; bandhanam bondage ; tayoḥ their .

Translation

Just see how much suffering I have caused My offenseless parents! Because of Me their sons were killed and they themselves imprisoned.

Just see how much suffering I have caused My offenseless parents ! Because of Me their sons were killed and they themselves imprisoned. KB 10.39.6 Then Kṛṣṇa said, “My father has undergone much tribulation simply from My being his son. For this reason also he has lost many other sons.

Purport

Because Kaṁsa had heard a prophecy that the eighth son of Devakī would kill him, he tried to kill all her children. For the same reason, he imprisoned her and her husband, Vasudeva.

" From me, their son, they have suffered. Though I am their son, I have caused their sons to be killed."

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Because of me (asmad) there has been much suffering for my parents. The plural is used to represent Kṛṣṇa, and said out of respect. Or it can mean Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. Asmados dvayoś ca: the plural of asmad can indicate the singular or dual. (Pāṇini 1.2.59) Yad-dhetoḥ is repeated to express that he is the sole cause of their suffering and because of his deep sense of repentance.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

e remembered the suffering of his parents, with himself as the cause and repents. Aho indicates lamentation. Plural is used to indicate Balarāma and others or to respect those to whom he caused suffering. Yaddhetoḥ is repeated to indicate that he was the sole cause. I am the cause. This gives a reason for going to Mathurā and giving relief to Akrūra.
