तां गृहीत्वा चरणयोर्जातमात्रां स्वसु: सुताम् । अपोथयच्छिलापृष्ठे स्वार्थोन्मूलितसौहृद: ॥ ८ ॥

tāṁ gṛhītvā caraṇayor jāta-mātrāṁ svasuḥ sutām apothayac chilā-pṛṣṭhe svārthonmūlita-sauhṛdaḥ

Synonyms

tām the child ; gṛhītvā taking by force ; caraṇayoḥ by the two legs ; jāta mātrām — the newborn child ; svasuḥ of his sister ; sutām the daughter ; apothayat smashed ; śilā pṛṣṭhe — on the surface of a stone ; sva artha — unmūlita — uprooted because of intense selfishness ; sauhṛdaḥ all friendship or family relationships .

Translation

Having uprooted all relationships with his sister because of intense selfishness, Kaṁsa, who was sitting on his knees, grasped the newborn child by the legs and tried to dash her against the surface of a stone.

Having uprooted all relationships with his sister because of intense selfishness, Kaṁsa, who was sitting on his knees, grasped the newborn child by the legs and tried to dash her against the surface of a stone. KB 10.4.8 …and attempted to dash her on the stone mercilessly. This is a graphic example of a cruel demon who could sacrifice all relationships for the sake of personal gratification.

This verse shows his cruel nature. Jāta-mātrāṁ means the new born child which was still wet with embryonic fluids. Hari-vaṁśa says sā garbha-śayana-kliṣṭā garbhāklinnamūrddhaja: the child, in pain from being in the womb, had its head moist with fluid.
