The fighting increased as they pushed each other from one place to another. One captured the other and threw him down on the ground, and another rushed from the back to the front of another and tried to overcome him with a hold. The fighting increased step by step.

Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī explains that the word
parirambha
indicates crushing one’s opponent with one’s arms.

Holding the opponent’s hands or other limbs, each would drag the opponent here and there (paribhramanam). They would push each other away, and squeeze the opponent in their two arms. They would throw each other on the ground, jump towards each other, pursue the opponent. In this way they would counter each other’s moves.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Utsarpaṇāpasarpaṇaiḥ means “by approaching from the front and back.” The aorist tense is used in the verb pratyarundhatām. The addition of the letter n is poetic license. Each tried to stop the other.
