yā vai śriyārcitam ajādibhir āpta-kāmair yogeśvarair api yad ātmani rāsa-goṣṭhyām kṛṣṇasya tad bhagavataḥ caraṇāravindaṁ nyastaṁ staneṣu vijahuḥ parirabhya tāpam

Translation

The goddess of fortune herself, along with Lord Brahmā and all the other demigods, who are masters of yogic perfection, can worship the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa only within her mind. But during the rāsa dance Lord Kṛṣṇa placed His feet upon these gopīs’ breasts, and by embracing those feet the gopīs gave up all distress.

The goddess of fortune herself, along with Lord Brahmā and all the other demigods, who are masters of yogic perfection, can worship the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa only within her mind. But during the rāsa dance Lord Kṛṣṇa placed His feet upon these gopīs' breasts, and by embracing those feet the gopīs gave up all distress. KB 10.47.62 Uddhava appreciated the extraordinary fortune of the gopīs, who were relieved of all material pangs and anxieties by placing on their beautiful high breasts the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, which are worshiped not only by the goddess of fortune but by such exalted demigods as Brahmā and Lord Śiva, and which great yogīs meditate upon within their hearts.

He again glorifies the mahabhava of the Gopis which is rare to Laksmi and others in this verse. "Certainly (vai) they relieved their mental anguish at the rasa arena (rasa gosthyam) by embracing to their breasts the lotus feet of Krsna, which Brahma, Laksmi and others worship in their mind only (atmani), and cannot directly touch those feet." This is explained in such veres as "those feet which Laksmi, desiring to obtain, performed austerieties." (sb.10.16.36)

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Not only are the gopīs to be glorified for excellence of the rāsa dance which allowed them to attain him, but also they should be glorified for their attainment of him. Vai indicates that it is well known, astonishing to all people. The gopīs embraced the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, famous as Svayam Bhagavān with incomparable form. Those feet could be obtained by their rūḍha-bhāva alone. Gopyas tapaḥ kim acaran: what worship must the gopīs have performed! (SB 10.44.14) They embraced those feet which were most attractive (pra--pada) as described in the following: yat te sujāta-caraṇāmburuhaṁ staneṣu bhītāḥ śanaiḥ priya dadhīmahi karkaśeṣu O dearly beloved! Your lotus feet are so soft that we place them gently on our breasts, fearing that your feet will be hurt. SB 10.31.19 Instead of prapadāravindam sometimes caraṇāravindam is seen. Embracing those feet with great attachment and the highest affection, they gave up their suffering. They gave up all the previous experiences of suffering by the experience of their present bhāvas. Bhakti caused only by receiving his feet indicates the great rarity of realizing Kṛṣṇa. The perfect tense is used (vijahuḥ) to indicate that Uddhava did not witness this event. Thus even a great devotee like Uddhava could not understand the dealings during the rāsa dance. By their embracing his feet, his own attraction for them is also shown. He forcibly placed his feet on their breasts. The special time is mentioned: at the meeting at the beginning of the rāsa dance, where the most incredible pastimes took place. Saṁsparśanenāṅka-kṛtāṅghri-hastayoḥ: massaging his hands and feet as they held them in their laps. (SB 10.32.15) tāsām āvirabhūc chauriḥ smayamāna-mukhāmbujaḥ pītāmbara-dharaḥ sragvī sākṣān manmatha-manmathaḥ Then Kṛṣṇa, a smile on his lotus face, appeared before the gopīs, wearing a garland and a yellow garment. He directly appeared as one who can bewilder the mind of Cupid, who himself bewilders the minds of ordinary people. SB 10.32.2 cakāsa gopī-pariṣad-gato ‘rcitas trailokya-lakṣmy-eka-padaṁ vapur dadhat He revealed in front of them a manifestation which gave exclusive shelter to the wealth of all types of beauty of all objects existing until his appearance in all the three worlds and even Mahāvaikuṇṭha. SB 10.32.14 These verses show pastimes more remarkable than at any other time at that place. Lakṣmī of Vaikuṇṭha worshipped those feet in her mind constantly with intense bhāva but did not obtain those feet. yad-vāñchayā śrīr lalanācarat tapo vihāya kāmān su-ciraṁ dhṛta-vratā The goddess of fortune performed austerities for centuries, giving up all other desires and taking austere vows. SB 10.16.36 Those feet were also worshipped by the controlling devatās like Brahmā and Śiva, and by ātmārāma devotees (āpta-kāmaiḥ) and by the best of all yogīs—those practicing pure bhakti-yoga. The devotees worship those feet in their minds. The past participle (arcitam) indicates the present tense. Since the gopīs obtained on their breasts those feet not obtainable by all others very soon they would attract him and control him.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

“Generally all devotees give up their family members to attain the lord. What is special about the gopīs?” They have a glorious position because of a very rare attainment. Lakṣmī has worshipped his feet by massaging them in prema. Brahmā (aja) and Śiva (ādibhiḥ) have worshipped those feet. Ajā can also refer to yogamāyā, served by Brahmā. Ādibhiḥ can mean Vidyā and other śaktis. Liberated souls (āpta-kāmaiḥ) also worshipped those feet because the feet were reddish, destroying all suffering and flowing with madhura-rasa. Or they worshipped the feet as the most excellent goal, taking shelter of those feet with the understanding that liberation was useless by mercy of devotees. The devotees (yogeśvaraḥ) also worshipped those feet. They all worshipped the feet in their pure minds by meditation. They all worshipped in their minds because they did not obtain direct association with the Lord. Or instead of yad, sadā is sometimes seen. This may modify the last sentence. The feet were always on the gopīs breasts. evaṁ śaśāṅkāṁśu-virājitā niśāḥ sa satya-kāmo ’nuratābalā-gaṇaḥ siṣeva ātmany avaruddha-saurataḥ sarvāḥ śarat-kāvya-kathā-rasāśrayāḥ With gopīs firmly attached to him with anurāga, Kṛṣṇa, whose desires are always pure, who had fixed in his mind enjoyment with them, served the nights lit by the rays of the moon-- all the nights which give shelter to poetic topics or rasa in autumn. SB 10.33.25 Thus the gopīs’ attainment was most rare. The order of the persons is from inferior to superior, starting from Brahmā. This was stated by Akrūra also. Being worshipped by Brahmā and others, the feet are shown to yield all results, to be the highest goal, and to be most worthy of worship. Arcitam is in the past tense. Now that Kṛṣṇa has appeared in Gokula complete with all aṁśas and plays there with absorption, others cannot worship him. The gopīs placed on their breasts the feet of Kṛsṇa, the form of the highest bliss, revealing his unlimited powers, the feet of Kṛṣṇa, who is my Lord, acting independently. Uddhava remembers Kṛsna, served by many, with his greatness of form and quality that he experienced, with an arousal of prema from prolonged separation. Or Kṛṣna is he who is inconceivable in form and qualities. His feet are compared to a lotus because of their redness, ability to remove pain and because they follow with sweet rasa. In the play (goṣtḥyam) of the rāsa dance, or at a gathering at the beginning of the dance, the gopīs placed those feet on their breasts. kācid añjalināgṛhṇāt tanvī tāmbūla-carvitam ekā tad-aṅghri-kamalaṁ santaptā stanayor adhāt A slender gopī respectfully took in her joined hands the betel nut he had chewed, and another gopī, burning with desire, put his lotus feet on her breasts. SB 10.32.5 One gopīs represents many. Or the gopis began asking questions: bhajato ’nubhajanty eka eka etad-viparyayam nobhayāṁś ca bhajanty eka etan no brūhi sādhu bhoḥ The gopīs said: Some people reciprocate the affection only of those who are affectionate toward them, while others show affection even to those who are indifferent or inimical. And yet others will not show affection toward anyone. Dear Kṛṣṇa, please properly explain this matter to us. SB 10.32.16 While asking, they placed his feet on their breasts, with firm embraces. sabhājayitvā tam anaṅga-dīpanaṁ sahāsa-līlekṣaṇa-vibhrama-bhruvā saṁsparśanenāṅka-kṛtāṅghri-hastayoḥ saṁstutya īṣat kupitā babhāṣire Kṛṣṇa had awakened romantic desires within the gopīs, and they honored him by glancing at him with playful smiles, gesturing amorously with their eyebrows, and massaging his hands and feet as they held them in their laps. Even while worshiping him, however, they felt somewhat angry, and thus they addressed him as follows. SB 10.32.15 Or being strong embraced by the Lord, they placed his feet on their breasts, embraced them and completely destroyed the pain of separation or the fever of love. Vai indicates that it is well known. Ākrūra said; yad arcitaṁ brahma-bhavādibhiḥ suraiḥ śriyā ca devyā munibhiḥ sa-sātvataiḥ go-cāraṇāyānucaraiś carad vane yad gopikānāṁ kuca-kuṅkumāṅkitam Those lotus feet are worshiped by Brahmā, Śiva and all the other devatās, by Lakṣmī and her associates and by devotees in this world, as well as the followers of Pañcarātra. Upon those lotus feet the Lord walks about the forest while herding the cows with his companions, and those feet are smeared with the kuṁkuma from the gopīs’ breasts. SB 10.38.8 The others worshipped those feet in their minds. The gopīs with special pastimes directly embraced those feet. Their glory is self-evident. Brahmā and others do not meet Kṛṣṇa. The liberated souls do not embrace those feet. The ordinary devotees do not place the feet on their breasts. And Lakṣmī does not participate in the rāsa dance. By the power of association with the gopīs, Uddhava developed a similar bhāva. He achieved intimate friendship with the gopīs. Thus he endeavoured to destroy their pain of separation at that time. Or seeing the great beauty of Kṛṣṇa’s feet, Lakṣmī, bewildered, worshipped those feet by doing austerities to attain him. dhanyeyam adya dharaṇī tṛṇa-vīrudhas tvat- pāda-spṛśo druma-latāḥ karajābhimṛṣṭāḥ nadyo ’drayaḥ khaga-mṛgāḥ sadayāvalokair gopyo ’ntareṇa bhujayor api yat-spṛhā śrīḥ This earth has now become most fortunate by the touch of your feet. The grass and bushes are most fortunate for the same reason, and the trees and creepers have been touched by your fingernails .The rivers and mountains are fortunate, being touched by your feet. The birds and animals have been touched with your merciful glances. But above all, you have embraced the young cowherd women between your two arms—a favor hankered after by the goddess of fortune herself. SB 10.15.8
