यथावदुपसङ्गम्य बन्धुभिर्गान्दिनीसुत: । सम्पृष्टस्तै: सुहृद्वार्तां स्वयं चापृच्छदव्ययम् ॥ ३ ॥

yathāvad upasaṅgamya bandhubhir gāndinī-sutaḥ sampṛṣṭas taiḥ suhṛd-vārtāṁ svayaṁ cāpṛcchad avyayam

Synonyms

yathā — vat — appropriately ; upasaṅgamya — meeting ; bandhubhiḥ — with his relatives and friends ; gāndinī — sutaḥ — Akrūra, son of Gāndinī ; sampṛṣṭaḥ — inquired from ; taiḥ — by them ; suhṛt — of their dear ones ; vārtām — for news ; svayam — himself ; ca — in addition ; apṛcchat — asked ; avyayam — about their well-being .

Translation

After Akrūra, the son of Gāndinī, had appropriately greeted all his relatives and friends, they asked him for news of their family members, and he in turn asked about their welfare.

After Akrūra, the son of Gāndinī, had appropriately greeted all his relatives and friends, they asked him for news of their family members, and he in turn asked about their welfare. KB 10.49.3 All those who met Akrūra, known also as the son of Gāndinī, were very much pleased to receive him and inquire about the welfare of their respective relatives. He was offered a good seat at his receptions, and he in turn inquired all about the welfare and activities of his relatives.

According to etiquette, he met the elders, offering respects and mixing with them with affection. They asked about the health of the Yādavas (suhṛd-vārtām) with affection (saṁ—prṣṭaḥ) as well as making him comfortable as a guest according to the rules.

Calling him Gāndinī-suta suggests that he knew dharma. Thus he respected the elders by obeisances, equals by embraces and inferiors by giving blessings (yathāvat upasaṁgamya). He met all with affection. They asked about the Yadus (suhṛd-vartām) with affection and according to rules in welcoming guests.
