दिष्टय‍ा संसारचक्रेऽस्मिन् वर्तमान: पुनर्भव: । उपलब्धो भवानद्य दुर्लभं प्रियदर्शनम् ॥ २४ ॥

Verse text

diṣṭyā saṁsāra-cakre ’smin vartamānaḥ punar-bhavaḥ upalabdho bhavān adya durlabhaṁ priya-darśanam

Synonyms

diṣṭyā it is also by great fortune ; saṁsāra cakre asmin — in this world of birth and death ; vartamānaḥ although I was existing ; punaḥ bhavaḥ — my meeting with you is just like another birth ; upalabdhaḥ being obtained by me ; bhavān you ; adya today ; durlabham although it was never to happen ; priya darśanam — to see you again, my very dear friend and brother .

Translation

It is also by good fortune that I am seeing you. Having obtained this opportunity, I feel as if I have taken birth again. Even though one is present in this world, to meet with intimate friends and dear relatives in this material world is extremely difficult.

It is also by good fortune that I am seeing you. Having obtained this opportunity, I feel as if I have taken birth again. Even though one is present in this world, to meet with intimate friends and dear relatives in this material world is extremely difficult. KB 10.5.24 “Dear friend, I was imprisoned by Kaṁsa, and now I am released; therefore this is another birth for me. I had no hope of seeing you again, but by God’s grace I can see you.” In this way, Vasudeva indirectly expressed his anxiety about Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa was sent incognito to the bed of Mother Yaśodā, and after Nanda very pompously celebrated Kṛṣṇa’s birth ceremony, he went to Mathurā. So Vasudeva was very much pleased and said, “This is a new birth for me.” He never expected that Kṛṣṇa would live, because all his other sons had been killed by Kaṁsa.

Purport

Vasudeva had been imprisoned by Kaṁsa, and therefore, although present in Mathurā, he was unable to see Nanda Mahārāja for many years. Therefore when they met again, Vasudeva considered this meeting to be another birth.

"Because I have today met you, by good fortunate, I have again taken birth in this world . Before this time, not meeting you, my life is like death."

By good fortune I can meet you today, because to see dear friends is very rare. “It is not rare to see me, since I am under your control.” You seem to have been born again. “How is this?” You are existing in the wheel of saṁsāra, where death is always possible. The sentiment here is aniṣṭhāśaṅkīnīva bandhu-hṛdayāni: a relative or intimate friend is always fearful of some injury to his beloved. (Abhijñāna-śakuntalā-nāṭaka) Or, existing in the wheel of saṁsāra, it is as if you are reborn in the form of your son, caused by his birth. That is your good fortune. It is rare to see dear friends, what to speak of seeing you filled with such bliss. Or it is fortune somehow in this wheel of saṁsāra, for I have taken birth again because of seeing you today, which is rare.

You are existing in the wheel of saṁsāra, where death is always possible. The sentiment here is aniṣṭhāśaṅkīnīva bandhu-hṛdayāni: a relative or intimate friend is always fearful of some injury to his beloved. (Abhijñāna-śakuntalā-nāṭaka) Or though you exist in this wheel of saṁsāra, suddenly filled with sorrow for children or wife, it is good fortune to meet you today, when you have been born again as your son, for it is rare to see dear ones. Or It is good fortunate that, though in the wheel of saṁsāra, you are as if reborn because you have attained seeing a dear son which is rare in old age. Or though I exist in the wheel of saṁsāra, by good fortunate I am as if reborn because you, my dear friend, have attained sight of a dear son, which is rare.
