महार्हवस्त्राभरणकञ्चुकोष्णीषभूषिता: । गोपा: समाययू राजन् नानोपायनपाणय: ॥ ८ ॥

mahārha-vastrābharaṇa- kaṣcukoṣṇīṣa-bhūṣitāḥ gopāḥ samāyayū rājan nānopāyana-pāṇayaḥ

mahā arha — extremely valuable ; vastra ābharaṇa — with garments and ornaments ; kaṣcuka by a particular type of garment used in Vṛndāvana ; uṣṇīṣa with turbans ; bhūṣitāḥ being nicely dressed ; gopāḥ all the cowherd men ; samāyayuḥ came there ; rājan O King (Mahārāja Parīkṣit) ; nānā various ; upāyana presentations ; pāṇayaḥ holding in their hands .

Translation

O King Parīkṣit, the cowherd men dressed very opulently with valuable ornaments and garments such as coats and turbans. Decorated in this way and carrying various presentations in their hands, they approached the house of Nanda Mahārāja.

O King Parīkṣit, the cowherd men dressed very opulently with valuable ornaments and garments such as coats and turbans. Decorated in this way and carrying various presentations in their hands, they approached the house of Nanda Mahārāja. KB 10.5.8 When all the ecstatic cowherd men heard that Nanda Mahārāja, the father of Kṛṣṇa, was celebrating the birth ceremony of his son, they became spontaneously joyful. They dressed themselves with very costly garments and ornamented their bodies with different kinds of earrings and necklaces and wore great turbans on their heads. After dressing themselves in this gorgeous way, they took various kinds of presentations and thus approached the house of Nanda Mahārāja.

Purport

When we consider the past condition of the agriculturalist in the village, we can see how opulent he was, simply because of agricultural produce and protection of cows. At the present, however, agriculture having been neglected and cow protection given up, the agriculturalist is suffering pitiably and is dressed in a niggardly torn cloth. This is the distinction between the India of history and the India of the present day. By the atrocious activities of ugra-karma, how we are killing the opportunity of human civilization!

Seven verses show that all of Gokula had the highest attraction for Nanda and Yaśodā. After performing auspicious acts in their houses (sam), such as cleaning and sprinkling with water, they came (āyayūḥ) to Nanda’s house. The description of the cowherds indicates their great joy. They dressed in cloth and ornaments kept carefully in their houses because they were so valuable. They had valuable jewels in their hands which they would offer to Nanda. Śukadeva addresses Parīkṣit. “O King!” Another meaning of rājan is “one who shines (rāj) with great prema.” Or rājan can modify nānopayana-pānayaḥ. They held various gifts which shone. The word gopāḥ indicates that they had a natural affection in their hearts for Kṛṣṇa because of attachment to cows. Another meaning is that by their great prema they nourished (pā) the earth (go).
