kanyāṁ caidyāya sādhitum
yady āgatya haret kṛṣno
rāmādyair yadubhir vṛtaḥ
yotsyāmaḥ saṁhatās tena

samagra-bala-vāhanāḥ

Translation
To secure the bride for Śiśupāla, the kings who envied Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma came to the following decision among themselves: “If Kṛṣṇa comes here with Balarāma and the other Yadus to steal the bride, we shall band together and fight Him.” Thus those envious kings went to the wedding with their entire armies and a full complement of military conveyances.

It was an open secret that Rukmiṇī was meant to be married to Kṛṣṇa but that her elder brother Rukmī had arranged her marriage to Śiśupāla. There was also some whispering about a rumor that Rukmiṇī had sent a messenger to Kṛṣṇa; therefore the soldiers suspected that Kṛṣṇa might cause a disturbance by attempting to kidnap Rukmiṇī. Even though they were not without fear, they were all prepared to give Kṛṣṇa a good fight to prevent the girl from being taken away.
Purport
The word
saṁhatāḥ,
which normally means “bound tightly together,” may also mean “thoroughly struck down” or “killed.” Thus although Kṛṣṇa’s enemies thought they were unified and strong —
saṁhatāḥ
in the former sense — they could not successfully oppose the Personality of Godhead, and consequently they would be struck down and killed —
saṁhatāḥ
in the latter sense.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Yattāḥ means “prepared.” Śrīdhara Svāmī does not accept verse 19. However since the statement in that verse completes the clause in the previous verse, it should be explained, since it is accepted in all the books. The kings came with full strength of their armies and conveyances. Though their conveyances are included in mentioning the full strength of the armies, they are mentioned separately to indicate that multitude of warriors came with their conveyances. Instead of samagra sometimes samartha (capable) is seen.

The reason the kings sided with Śiśupāla was that they hated Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. They prepared (i). The kings came with the full strength of their armies and conveyances. Though their conveyances are included in mentioning the full strength of the armies, they are mentioned separately to indicate that multitude of warriors came with their conveyances. Instead of samagra sometimes samartha (capable) is seen.
