श्रीरुक्‍मिण्युवाच योगेश्वराप्रमेयात्मन् देवदेव जगत्पते । हन्तुं नार्हसि कल्याण भ्रातरं मे महाभुज ॥ ३३ ॥

śrī-rukmiṇy uvāca yogeśvarāprameyātman deva-deva jagat-pate hantuṁ nārhasi kalyāṇa bhrātaraṁ me mahā-bhuja

Synonyms

śrī rukmiṇī uvāca — Śrī Rukmiṇī said ; yoga īśvara — O controller of all mystic power ; aprameya ātman — O immeasurable one ; deva deva — O Lord of lords ; jagat pate — O master of the universe ; hantum na arhasi please do not kill ; kalyāṇa O all auspicious one ; bhrātaram brother ; me my ; mahā bhuja — O mighty-armed one .

Translation

Śrī Rukmiṇī said: O controller of all mystic power, immeasurable one, Lord of lords, master of the universe! O all auspicious and mighty-armed one, please do not kill my brother!

Śrī Rukmiṇī said: O controller of all mystic power, immeasurable one, Lord of lords, master of the universe! O all auspicious and mighty-armed one, please do not kill my brother! KB 10.54.33 Rukmiṇī first addressed Kṛṣṇa as Yogeśvara. Yogeśvara means “one who is possessed of inconceivable opulence and energy.” Kṛṣṇa possesses inconceivable opulence and energy, whereas Rukmiṇī’s brother had only limited military potency. Kṛṣṇa is immeasurable, whereas her brother was measured in every step of his life. Therefore, Rukmī was not comparable even to an insignificant insect before the unlimited power of Kṛṣṇa. She also addressed Kṛṣṇa as the God of the gods. There are many powerful demigods, such as Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, Indra, Candra and Varuṇa, but Kṛṣṇa is the Lord of all these gods, whereas Rukmiṇī’s brother was not only an ordinary human being but in fact the lowest of all because he had no understanding of Kṛṣṇa. In other words, a human being who has no conception of the actual position of Kṛṣṇa is the lowest in human society. Then Rukmiṇī addressed Kṛṣṇa as Mahābhuja, which means “one with unlimited strength.” She also addressed Kṛṣṇa as Jagatpati, the master of the whole cosmic manifestation. In comparison, her brother was only an ordinary prince. In this way, Rukmiṇī compared the position of Rukmī with that of Kṛṣṇa and very feelingly pleaded with her husband not to kill her brother just at the auspicious time of her being united with Kṛṣṇa, but to excuse him. In other words, she displayed her real position as a woman. She was happy to get Kṛṣṇa as her husband at the moment when her marriage to another was to be performed, but she did not want it to be at the loss of her elder brother, who, after all, loved his young sister and wanted to hand her over to one who, according to his own calculations, was a better man.

"O master of Yoga, you are the holder of great inconceivable power, while Rukmi is the lowest among the controlled. You are the immeasurable one (aprameyatma) , and he is like an insect among the limited. You are supreme among the devatas (deva deva), and he is the lowest among humans, because he is inimical to you. You are the protector of the universe (jagat pate), and though he is evil, because he is within the universe, he is to be protected. Therefore O auspicious one (kalyana), with mighty arms (maha bhuja), you should not kill that inauspicious person with no power in his arms."

O Kṛṣṇa, with inconceivable powers (yogeśvara), with unlimited form (aprameyātma), worshipped even by the brāhmaṇas (devadeva)! You are also the protector of everyone (jagatpate). Therefore you should not kill him. He should be saved. Everyone has insignificant powers and knowledge compared to you. You create auspiciousness for everyone (kalyāṇa). Therefore do not kill him. He is my brother and I am surrendered to you. Therefore do not kill him. You should not kill this insignificant rascal as a pastime, since you have great prowess (mahābhuja).

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

O Kṛṣṇa, with inconceivable powers (yogeśvara), with unlimited form (aprameyātma), worshipped even by the brāhmaṇas (devadeva)! This indicates that he is the supreme Lord because he is worshipped for his svarūpa of all powers. Moreover he is the great destroyer of the worlds (mahā-bhuja). Therefore you should not kill this insignificant person. Moreover you are the protector of the universe. “But this evil person should be killed.” O knower of dharma! One should not kill relatives. You know dharma of the devotees. He is my brother. You should not kill him because you are auspicious for the universe (kalyāṇa). Or the first two names indicate that he cannot be understood in his powerful form. Even devatās cannot know him. You are worshipped by austerities. O devadeva! You should forgive all offenses committed since you cannot be understood. Moreover, you should not kill this insignificant, weak fellow since you are so strong (mahābhuja).
