dahyamānasya dehasya
dhūmaś cāguru-saurabhaḥ
utthitaḥ kṛṣṇa-nirbhukta-
sapady āhata-pāpmanaḥ

Translation
Because of Kṛṣṇa’s having sucked the breast of the Rākṣasī Pūtanā, when Kṛṣṇa killed her she was immediately freed of all material contamination. Her sinful reactions automatically vanished, and therefore when her gigantic body was being burnt, the smoke emanating from her body was fragrant like aguru incense.

Because of Kṛṣṇa's having sucked the breast of the Rākṣasī Pūtanā, when Kṛṣṇa killed her she was immediately freed of all material contamination. Her sinful reactions automatically vanished, and therefore when her gigantic body was being burnt, the smoke emanating from her body was fragrant like aguru incense.

When all the limbs of Pūtanā’s body were burning, the smoke emanating from the fire created a good aroma of aguru. This aroma was due to her being killed by Kṛṣṇa. This means that the demon Pūtanā was washed of all her sinful activities and attained a celestial body.
Purport
Such are the effects of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. If one somehow or other becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious by applying his senses in the service of the Lord, one is immediately freed from material contamination.
Śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ
(
Bhāg.
1.2.17
). Hearing about the activities of Kṛṣṇa is the beginning of purified life.
Puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ:
simply by hearing and chanting, one becomes purified. Therefore, in discharging devotional service,
śravaṇa-kīrtana
(hearing and chanting) is most important. Then, with purified senses, one begins to render service to the Lord (
hṛṣīkeṇa hṛṣīkeśa-sevanam
).
Bhaktir ucyate:
this is called
bhakti.
When Pūtanā was somehow or other, directly or indirectly, induced to render some service to the Lord by feeding Him with her breast, she was immediately purified, so much so that when her nasty material body was burnt to ashes, it gave off the fragrance of
aguru,
the most agreeably scented herb.

This verse describes how Putana’s body became sanctified by the touch of Krsna’s mouth. Her body became purified of all sins (ahata papma) at the moment (sapadi) that Krsna began drinking from her breast (krsna nirbhukta).

The smoke from the burning body was scented with aguru. The word ca indicates that even her body became fragrant because of being enjoyed by Kṛṣṇa, having been touched by Kṛṣṇa’s mouth. Kṛṣṇa, filled with unlimited attractions such as his fragrant spiritual body, had constantly drunk (nirbhukta) her milk along with her life airs. For anyone who smelled, immediately on smelling the smoke all sins were completely destroyed (ā-hata). This shows the power of the Lord’s remnants. What then to say of the power of pure items offered with devotion? This is expressed in the next verse also.

The smoke from the burning body was scented with aguru. The word ca indicates that even her body became fragrant because of being enjoyed by Kṛṣṇa, having been touched by Kṛṣṇa’s mouth. Kṛṣṇa, filled with unlimited attractions such as his fragrant spiritual body, had constantly drunk (nirbhukta) her milk along with her life airs. For anyone who smelled the smoke, immediately all sins were completely destroyed (ā-hata).
This should be said. Just as remnants of the Lord’ offering offered by those desiring liberation become pure nectar, destroying the great sickness of saṁsāra, a great poison obstructing the Lord, the body of Pūtana, the remnant of the lord’s enjoyment, became free of all faults and most purifying. Thus it is suitable that the smoke was fragrant.
