वैदर्भ्येतदविज्ञाय त्वयादीर्घसमीक्षया । वृता वयं गुणैर्हीना भिक्षुभि: श्लाघिता मुधा ॥ १६ ॥

Verse text

vaidarbhy etad avijṣāya tvayādīrgha-samīkṣayā vṛtā vayaṁ guṇair hīnā bhikṣubhiḥ ślāghitā mudhā

Synonyms

vaidarbhi O princess of Vidarbha ; etat this ; avijṣāya not knowing ; tvayā by you ; adīrgha samīkṣayā — without long-range vision ; vṛtāḥ chosen ; vayam We ; guṇaiḥ of good qualities ; hīnāḥ devoid ; bhikṣubhiḥ by beggars ; ślāghitāḥ praised ; mudhā out of their bewilderment .

Translation

O Vaidarbhī, not being farsighted, you didn’t realize this, and therefore you chose Us as your husband, even though We have no good qualities and are glorified only by deluded beggars.

Translation (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

O Vaidarbhī, not being farsighted, you didn't realize this, and therefore you chose Us as your husband, even though We have no good qualities and are glorified only by deluded beggars.

Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)

"I have been accepted by you as husband, because you are short sighted (adirgha samiksa), not considering the overall picture."

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

He summarizes his point. Not considering carefully all that I have said (etat) you chose me. “You are endowed with all good qualities by your nature. Hearing that (SB 10.52.37), I understood all about you.” I was praised by persons simply because they were greedy for money. O princes from Vidarbha, you heard from a great distance away. It should not be said that in giving them money I showed the quality of generosity, because I, being a fool (mūḍhāh), made people praise me out of greed for you, though not having a desire for money.
