प्रमृज्याश्रुकले नेत्रे स्तनौ चोपहतौ शुचा । आश्लिष्य बाहुना राजननन्यविषयां सतीम् ॥ २७ ॥ सान्‍त्‍वयामास सान्‍त्‍वज्ञ: कृपया कृपणां प्रभु: । हास्यप्रौढिभ्रमच्चित्तामतदर्हां सतां गति: ॥ २८ ॥

pramṛjyāśru-kale netre stanau copahatau śucā āśliṣya bāhunā rājan ananya-viṣayāṁ satīm sāntvayām āsa sāntva-jṣaḥ kṛpayā kṛpaṇāṁ prabhuḥ hāsya-prauḍhi-bhramac-cittām atad-arhāṁ satāṁ gatiḥ

Synonyms

pramṛjya — wiping ; aśru — kale — filled with tears ; netre — her eyes ; stanau — her breasts ; ca — and ; upahatau — disarrayed ; śucā — by her sorrowful tears ; aśliṣya — embracing her ; bāhunā — with His arm ; rājan — O King (Parīkṣit) ; ananya — no other ; viṣayām — whose object of desire ; satīm — chaste ; sāntvayām āsa — He consoled ; sāntva — of ways of consoling ; jṣaḥ — the expert knower ; kṛpayā — compassionately ; kṛpaṇām — pitiable ; prabhuḥ — the Supreme Lord ; hāsya — of His joking ; prauḍhi — by the cleverness ; bhramat — becoming bewildered ; cittām — whose mind ; atat — arhām — not deserving that ; satām — of pure devotees ; gatiḥ — the goal .

Translation

Wiping her tear-filled eyes and her breasts, which were stained by tears of grief, the Supreme Lord, the goal of His devotees, embraced His chaste wife, who desired nothing but Him, O King. Expert in the art of pacification, Śrī Kṛṣṇa tenderly consoled pitiable Rukmiṇī, whose mind was bewildered by His clever joking and who did not deserve to suffer so.

Wiping her tear-filled eyes and her breasts, which were stained by tears of grief, the Supreme Lord, the goal of His devotees, embraced His chaste wife, who desired nothing but Him, O King. Expert in the art of pacification, Śrī Kṛṣṇa tenderly consoled pitiable Rukmiṇī, whose mind was bewildered by His clever joking and who did not deserve to suffer so. KB 10.60.27-28 Lord Kṛṣṇa dried the wet breasts of Rukmiṇījī with His hand. Understanding the seriousness of Rukmiṇī’s love for Him, He embraced her to His chest. The Supreme Personality is expert in putting a thing reasonably for one’s understanding, and thus He tried to retract all that He had said before. He is the only resort for all devotees, and so He knows very well how to satisfy His pure devotees. Kṛṣṇa understood that Rukmiṇī could not follow the statements He had made in a joking way. To counteract her confusion, He spoke as follows.

He wiped her eye brimming with tears (asru kale) and her breasts afflicted with tears of sorrow (suca).

He (prabhuḥ) pacified her, endowed with qualities such as chastity to her husband (satī) because he is the personal shelter of all devotees (satāṁ gatiḥ), what to speak of being her shelter, since she took shelter of him alone (ananya-viṣayām). The cause of his mercy (kṛpayā) was her misery (kṛpanām) on thinking he would leave her. The cause of her misery was his joking. The cause of his joking was her soft nature (atad-arhām). “How was she quickly pacified after such intense grief?” Kṛṣṇa was expert at pacification. His expertise is described. He wiped away her tears which were flowing (kale) and embraced her. Remembering his expertise at causing grief and pacification, Śukadeva says with astonishment: whatever he does at any place is done with ability (prabhuḥ).

Her eyes flowed with tears. Hearing this, Parīkṣit became filled with sorrow. Śukadeva comforts him. O king! Or rājan stands for arājan: Rukmiṇī was faded in complexion because of pain, because she had no other shelter (ananya-viṣayām), since she was dedicated to her husband (satīm). He used one arm to put her on his lap in alarm. He wiped her eyes with one hand, and her breasts with the other. Or it means two arms. He embraced her tightly. He was capable of pacifying her (prabhuḥ) because he knew sweet speech (sāntva-jñaḥ). Her heart was disturbed by worry. He should not have joked with her so seriously since he was the goal of the devotees (satāṁ gatiḥ).
