tvak-śmaśru-roma-nakha-keśa-pinaddham antar māṁsāsthi-rakta-kṛmi-viṭ-kapha-pitta-vātam jīvac-chavaṁ bhajati kānta-matir vimūḍhā yā te padābja-makarandam ajighratī strī

Translation

A woman who fails to relish the fragrance of the honey of Your lotus feet becomes totally befooled, and thus she accepts as her husband or lover a living corpse covered with skin, whiskers, nails, head-hair and body-hair and filled with flesh, bones, blood, parasites, feces, mucus, bile and air.

A woman who fails to relish the fragrance of the honey of Your lotus feet becomes totally befooled, and thus she accepts as her husband or lover a living corpse covered with skin, whiskers, nails, head-hair and body-hair and filled with flesh, bones, blood, parasites, feces, mucus, bile and air. KB 10.60.45 “A man within this material world is just a dead body. In fact, superficially, the living entity is covered by this body, which is nothing but a bag of skin decorated with a beard and mustache, hairs on the body, nails on the fingers, and hairs on the head. Within this decorated bag are bunches of muscles, bundles of bones, and pools of blood, always mixed with stool, urine, mucus, bile and polluted air and enjoyed by different kinds of insects and germs. A foolish woman accepts such a dead body as her husband and, in sheer misunderstanding, loves him as her dear companion. This is possible only because such a woman has never relished the ever-blissful fragrance of Your lotus feet.

Here Lord Kṛṣṇa’s chaste wife makes a quite unequivocal statement about material sense gratification based on the physical body. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī comments as follows on this verse: On the authority of the statement sa vai patiḥ syād akuto-bhayaḥ svayam — “He indeed should become one’s husband who can remove all fear” — Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the real husband for all women at all times. Thus a woman who worships someone else as her husband simply worships a dead body. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī comments further: Rukmiṇī thus considered that although the sweetness of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet is well known, and although He possesses an eternal body full of knowledge and bliss, foolish women reject Him. An ordinary husband’s body is covered on the outside by skin and hair; otherwise, being filled with blood, feces, flesh, bile and so on, it would be overwhelmed with flies and other vermin attracted by its bad smell and other offensive qualities. Those who have no practical experience of the beauty and purity of Kṛṣṇa or of Kṛṣṇa consciousness may be confused by such uncompromising denunciations of material, bodily gratification. But those who are enlightened in Kṛṣṇa consciousness will be enlivened and enthused by such absolutely truthful statements.

Because of the scriptural statement that the husband should deliver his wife from all fear, you are actually the husband of all women at all times. But that woman who does not take you as a husband accepts only a dead body as a husband. The body is covered by skin, otherwise it would be covered by flies and other insects attracted to the foul smell. Inside are flesh, bones, blood, worms, stool, and phlegm. The foolish woman who thinks of that corpse as her lover accepts him as her husband. Why are they foolish? Because they do not smell the sweetness of the feet of you who are famous as having a body of sac cid ananda, a sweetness which has been spread everywhere by wind in the form of the reciters of the Puranas."

Those persons not qualified for a relationship with you or your devotees even in the mind should be completely condemned. She shows how they are living corpses by enumerating the bodily features. Because of seeing only the bodily elements inside and outside, the woman who considers a man to be her lover is only seeing a corpse. The insides are held together (pinaddham) by the skin etc. Otherwise the contents will be covered with flies and insects attracted to the foul odor. yadi nāmāsya kāyasya yad antas tad bahir bhavet daṇḍam uddyamya loko ‘yam śunaḥ kākānś ca vārayet If the innards of the body were to come outside, people would need to take sticks to drive away dogs and crows. Quoted in Locana, commentary of Abhinava Gupta on Dhvānyaloka of Ānandavardhana You on the other hand, in any of your forms, do not have such physical elements in your body since you are famous for having a form of eternity, knowledge and bliss--since your having a material body is denied in the scriptures, and I have personally realized it. That some of your forms are material is not approved by the Vedas. The Vedas testify that those forms are all made of eternity, knowledge and bliss. She makes this statement in order to reject the disgusting material body according to her realization. Kṛṣṇa said previous that she had a form similar to his, for pastimes (verse 9). However, criticizing bodies in this way, she wanted to enjoy with him without such realization--not in her present body. She desired to give up her body as if it were soiled clothing, in order to be qualified to worship him. Qualification is in steps. Kubjā, while possessing her previous body went into the inner chambers because she suddenly became qualified. Some gopīs gave up their previous bodies: antar-gṛha-gatāḥ kāścid gopyo ’labdha-vinirgamāḥ kṛṣṇaṁ tad-bhāvanā-yuktā dadhyur mīlita-locanāḥ Some of the gopīs, however, could not manage to get out of their houses, and instead they remained home with eyes closed, meditating upon him in pure love. SB 10.29.9 Because they gave up their previous bodies while attaining qualified bodies, Piṅgala criticized her present body. All women should be attracted to you as expressed in verse 42. The śrutis say in their prayers: dadhati sakṛn manas tvayi ya ātmani nitya-sukhe na punar upāsate puruṣa-sāra-harāvasathān Anyone who even once turns his mind toward you, the ever-blissful Soul of all existence, no longer dedicates himself to serving family life at home, which simply robs a man of his good qualities. SB 10.87.35 All of us are fixed on you alone, and have not been fixed with a form similar to yours. What to speak of persons who oppose you like Śiśupāla.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

One should not say that a woman does not approach you because you are invisible. You are glorified everywhere by all people. The living corpse is shown in two ways: internally and externally. It is covered (pinaddham) by skin, body hairs like eyelashes (roma) etc. Otherwise it would be covered with millions of insects and flies attracted by the bad smell. The coverings over the flesh are mentioned from superior to inferior. Flesh and the rest are objects of greater and greater disgust. The women who does not smell the honey of the lotus feet of you who are endowed with eternity knowledge and bliss is completely without intelligence (vimūḍhāḥ). You are completely different from the kings. You are excellent and they are disgusting. The women, thinking the man is beautiful (kānta-matiḥ), is actually foolish, being devoid of the fragrance of your lotus feet.
