गाव: सर्वगुणोपेता वास:स्रग्रुक्‍ममालिनी: आत्मजाभ्युदयार्थाय प्रादात्ते चान्वयुञ्जत ॥ १६ ॥

Verse text

gāvaḥ sarva-guṇopetā vāsaḥ-srag-rukma-mālinīḥ ātmajābhyudayārthāya prādāt te cānvayuṣjata

Synonyms

gāvaḥ — cows ; sarva — guṇa — upetāḥ — being fully qualified by giving sufficient milk, etc. ; vāsaḥ — well dressed ; srak — with flower garlands ; rukma — mālinīḥ — and with garlands of gold ; ātmaja — abhyudaya — arthāya — for the purpose of his son’s affluence ; prādāt — gave in charity ; te — those brāhmaṇas ; ca — also ; anvayuṣjata — accepted them .

Translation

Nanda Mahārāja, for the sake of the affluence of his own son Kṛṣṇa, gave the brāhmaṇas cows fully decorated with garments, flower garlands and gold necklaces. These cows, fully qualified to give ample milk, were given to the brāhmaṇas in charity, and the brāhmaṇas accepted them and bestowed blessings upon the whole family, and especially upon Kṛṣṇa.

Nanda Mahārāja, for the sake of the affluence of his own son Kṛṣṇa, gave the brāhmaṇas cows fully decorated with garments, flower garlands and gold necklaces. These cows, fully qualified to give ample milk, were given to the brāhmaṇas in charity, and the brāhmaṇas accepted them and bestowed blessings upon the whole family, and especially upon Kṛṣṇa. KB 10.7.16 All the cows which were given in charity were covered with nice gold-embroidered garments, and their horns were bedecked with golden rings; their hooves were covered with silver plate, and they wore garlands of flowers. He gave so many cows just for the welfare of his wonderful child, and the brāhmaṇas in return bestowed their heartfelt blessings.

Purport

Nanda Mahārāja first fed the brāhmaṇas sumptuously and then gave them in charity first-class cows fully decorated with golden necklaces, garments and flower garlands.

He gave cows. They are described as sarvagunopetah , endowed with all qualities. That means they gave much milk. The brahmanas then (anu) accepted the cows (ayunjata).

The cows are described half the verse. He gave cows in order to produce prosperity for his son after destroying all disturbances, but this was only a symptom of his affection for his son, which was his goal in life. After taking their meal (anu), the brāhmaṇas gave blessings since this would naturally follow (though it not mentioned explicitly in the verse).

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

He gave the best cows fully ornamented, that gave abundant milk and were young, as gifts, for his son’s bodily health (abhyudaya) and dharma, artha etc. or for wealth (abhyudaya). Actual Kṛṣṇa himself is all puruṣārthas. Thus out of affection Nanda performed these actions. After eating (anu) the brāhmaṇas accepted gifts.
