द‍ृष्ट्वा यशोदाप्रमुखा व्रजस्त्रिय औत्थानिके कर्मणि या: समागता: । नन्दादयश्चाद्भ‍ुतदर्शनाकुला: कथं स्वयं वै शकटं विपर्यगात् ॥ ८ ॥

dṛṣṭvā yaśodā-pramukhā vraja-striya autthānike karmaṇi yāḥ samāgatāḥ nandādayaś cādbhuta-darśanākulāḥ kathaṁ svayaṁ vai śakaṭaṁ viparyagāt

Synonyms

dṛṣṭvā — after seeing ; yaśodā — pramukhāḥ — headed by mother Yaśodā ; vraja — striyaḥ — all the ladies of Vraja ; autthānike karmaṇi — in the celebration of the utthāna ceremony ; yāḥ — those who ; samāgatāḥ — assembled there ; nanda — ādayaḥ ca — and the men, headed by Nanda Mahārāja ; adbhuta — darśana — by seeing the wonderful calamity (that the heavily loaded cart had broken upon the small baby, who still lay there unhurt) ; ākulāḥ — and thus they were very much perturbed as to how it had happened ; katham — how ; svayam — by itself ; vai — indeed ; śakaṭam — the handcart ; viparyagāt — became so heavily damaged, dismantled .

Translation

When mother Yaśodā and the other ladies who had assembled for the utthāna festival, and all the men, headed by Nanda Mahārāja, saw the wonderful situation, they began to wonder how the handcart had collapsed by itself. They began to wander here and there, trying to find the cause, but were unable to do so.

When mother Yaśodā and the other ladies who had assembled for the utthāna festival, and all the men, headed by Nanda Mahārāja, saw the wonderful situation, they began to wonder how the handcart had collapsed by itself. They began to wander here and there, trying to find the cause, but were unable to do so. KB 10.7.8 Mother Yaśodā and all the gopīs, as well as Mahārāja Nanda and the cowherd men, were astonished as to how the cart could have collapsed by itself.

All the women headed by Yasoda who had gathered together for the ceremony, and Nanda and others, seeing that astonishing event, became dismayed. "How could the cart fall apart on its own?" they asked.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

Yaśodā and all the women and Nanda and others, assembled for the festival, seeing the upset cart, becoming perturbed on seeing this astonishing event and, worrying because of the calamity, said (verb should be added) “How did the cart turn over by itself?” Instead of karmaṇi, sometimes parvaṇi is seen. The word vai indicates surprise.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Seeing the cart in that condition, with Kṛṣṇa sleeping beneath it, not in the house, all the people who had gathered for the festival, or others as well, became agitated in their hearts (ākulāḥ), because of the sudden overturning of the car. They feared some danger. Or they were overcome with prema (ākulāḥ) on constantly seeing astonishing Kṛṣṇa, or his astonishing pastimes. Not determining the cause they said, “How did the cart turn over on its own, without being kicked by a bull?” Vai expresses astonishment.
