यस्यच्छन्दोमयं ब्रह्म देह आवपनं विभो । श्रेयसां तस्य गुरुषु वासोऽत्यन्तविडम्बनम् ॥ ४५ ॥

Verse text

yasya cchando-mayaṁ brahma deha āvapanaṁ vibho śreyasāṁ tasya guruṣu vāso ’tyanta-viḍambanam

Translation

O almighty Lord, Your body comprises the Absolute Truth in the form of the Vedas and is thus the source of all auspicious goals of life. That You took up residence at the school of a spiritual master is simply one of Your pastimes in which You play the role of a human being.

KB 10.80.45 My dear Lord, the Vedic hymns, ritualistic ceremonies, religious activities and all other necessities for the perfection of human life, including economic development, sense gratification and liberation, are all derived from one source: Your supreme personality. All the different processes of life are ultimately meant for understanding Your personality. In other words, they are the different parts of Your transcendental form. And yet You played the role of a student and lived with us in the house of the guru. This means that You adopted all these pastimes for Your pleasure only; otherwise there was no need for Your playing the role of a human being.” Thus ends the Bhaktivedanta purport of the Eightieth Chapter of Kṛṣṇa, “The Meeting of Lord Kṛṣṇa with Sudāmā Brāhmaṇa.”

Thus end the purports of the humble servants of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda to the Tenth Canto, Eightieth Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled “The Brāhmaṇa Sudāmā Visits Lord Kṛṣṇa in Dvārakā.”

That you whose body is the verse of the Vedas, the place of all auspiciousness, lived in the gurukula (for learning ) was an act to teach others only.

What was the use of my studying? You are to be understood by the Vedas (cchando-mayam). Your body is the source of all human goals (śreyasām). Thus living in the guru’s house was simply some imitation, some amusement for your pastimes.

The reason for the Lord staying with a guru is stated after the explanation. You are full of all powers (vibho). Because of this you are the meaning of the Vedas and its goals. But you lived in many gurus’ houses. Why? You did it to teach the people (viḍambanam). Viḍambanam stands for vilambanam. You did this not only as Kṛṣṇa but as Rāma as well. Thus the word is in the plural (guruṣu). Or guru is in the plural out of respect and devotion. You are the Vedas (brahma) made of verses, giving rise to auspiciousness or you are the one (brahma) form (deha) which gives rise (avāpanam) to auspiciousness. Or you are the Vedas which arise from your body (dehe), coming from Brahmā’s mouth or the puruṣāvatāra’s mouth. Thus end the purports of the humble servants of His Divine Grace A.C. In the course of His loving talks with His friend Sudāmā, Lord Kṛṣṇa said, "My dear brāhmaṇa, have you brought any gift for Me from home? I regard as very significant even the smallest offering from My loving devotee." But the poor brāhmaṇa was ashamed to present Kṛṣṇa with his meager gift of flat rice. However, since Lord Kṛṣṇa is the Supersoul dwelling in all hearts, He knew why Sudāmā had come to visit Him. So He grabbed the bundle of flat rice Sudāmā was hiding and ate a handful of it with great pleasure. He was about to eat a second morsel when Rukmiṇī devī stopped Him. Feeling as if he had gone back to Godhead, Sudāmā spent that night comfortably in Lord Kṛṣṇa's palace, and the next morning he set off for home. As he passed along the highway, he thought of how fortunate he was to have been so honored by Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Absorbed in this meditation, Sudāmā arrived at the place where his home used to be-and he was struck with great wonder. Instead of his broken-down hovel, he saw a series of opulent palaces. While he stood astonished, a group of beautiful men and women came forward to greet him with singing and music. The brāhmaṇa's wife, wonderfully adorned with celestial jewelry, came out of the palace and welcomed him with great love and reverence. Sudāmā entered his home together with her, thinking that this extraordinary transformation must have been due to the Supreme Lord's mercy on him. From then on Sudāmā lived his life amidst lavish wealth, yet he maintained his mood of detachment and constantly chanted the glories of Lord Kṛṣṇa In a short time he broke off all bonds of bodily attachment and attained to the kingdom of God.
