एवं वृते भगवति मयेशे नृपयूथपा: । न सेहिरे याज्ञसेनि स्पर्धन्तो हृच्छयातुरा: ॥ ३१ ॥

Verse text

evaṁ vṛte bhagavati mayeśe nṛpa-yūthapāḥ na sehire yājṣaseni spardhanto hṛc-chayāturāḥ

Synonyms

evam thus ; vṛte being chosen ; bhagavati the Personality of Godhead ; mayā by me ; īśe the Lord ; nṛpa of kings ; yūtha pāḥ — the leaders ; na sehire could not tolerate it ; yājṣaseni O Draupadī ; spardhantaḥ becoming quarrelsome ; hṛt śaya — by lust ; āturāḥ distressed .

Translation

The leading kings there could not tolerate my having chosen the Supreme Personality of Godhead, O Draupadī. Burning with lust, they became quarrelsome.

Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī comments that the contamination of lust led the kings to quarrel foolishly with the Lord even after seeing His supreme power.

When I chose Kṛṣṇa endowed with all powers (bhagavati) since he was directly the Supreme Lord (īśe), in this manner (evam vṛte), at that moment also, the best of the kings such as Jarāsandha could not tolerate the situation. O Yājñaseni, Draupadī, daughter of Drupada! As the daughter to Drupada devoted to sacrifice, see the great arrogance of these kings.
