tataḥ kāmaiḥ pūryamāṇaḥ sa-vrajaḥ saha-bāndhavaḥ parārdhyābharaṇa-kṣauma- nānānarghya-paricchadaiḥ vasudevograsenābhyāṁ kṛṣṇoddhava-balādibhiḥ dattam ādāya pāribarhaṁ yāpito yadubhir yayau

Translation

Then, after Vasudeva, Ugrasena, Kṛṣṇa, Uddhava, Balarāma and others had fulfilled his desires and presented him with precious ornaments, fine linen and varieties of priceless household furnishings, Nanda Mahārāja accepted all these gifts and took his leave. Seen off by all the Yadus, he departed with his family members and the residents of Vraja.

Then, after Vasudeva, Ugrasena, Kṛṣṇa, Uddhava, Balarāma and others had fulfilled his desires and presented him with precious ornaments, fine linen and varieties of priceless household furnishings, Nanda Mahārāja accepted all these gifts and took his leave. Seen off by all the Yadus, he departed with his family members and the residents of Vraja. KB 10.84.67-68 At the end of this time, all the members of the Yadu dynasty tried to please the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana to their hearts’ content. The members of the Yadu dynasty tried to satisfy Nanda Mahārāja and his associates by offering them clothing, ornaments and many other valuable articles, and they all became fully satisfied. Vasudeva, Ugrasena, Lord Kṛṣṇa, Lord Balarāma, Uddhava and all other members of the Yadu dynasty presented their individual gifts to Nanda Mahārāja and his associates. After Nanda Mahārāja received these farewell presentations, he, along with his associates, started for Vrajabhūmi, Vṛndāvana.

According to Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī, at the end of the three months Mahārāja Nanda approached Kṛṣṇa and told Him, “My dear son, for one drop of perspiration from Your divine face I am ready to give up countless lives. Let us leave now for Vraja; I cannot spend any more time here.” Then he went to Vasudeva and told him, “My dear friend, please send Kṛṣṇa to Vraja,” and of King Ugrasena he requested, “Please order my friend to do this. If you refuse, I will have to drown myself here in Lord Paraśurāma’s lake. Just watch, if you do not believe me! We people of Vraja came to this holy place not to gain some piety on the occasion of the solar eclipse, but to get Kṛṣṇa back or die.” Hearing these desperate words from Nanda, Vasudeva and the others tried to pacify him with valuable gifts. Well-versed in the arts of diplomacy, Vasudeva consulted with his most trustworthy advisors and then satisfied Śrī Nanda by telling him, “My dearest friend, O King of Vraja, it is of course true that none of you can live without Kṛṣṇa. And how can we allow you to kill yourselves? Therefore, by all means I must send Kṛṣṇa back to Vraja. I will do so right after we accompany Him and His relatives and friends — among them many helpless women — back to Dvārakā. Then, the very next day, without trying to obstruct Him in any way, I will let Him leave for Vraja at an auspicious time of the day. This I swear to you a thousand times over. After all, how can we who came here with Kṛṣṇa go home without Him? What will people say about us? You are a great scholar in all matters, so please forgive me for making this request of you.” Next Ugrasena addressed Nanda Mahārāja: “My dear master of Vraja, I bear witness to Vasudeva’s statement and take this solemn vow: I will send Kṛṣṇa back to Vraja even if I have to do it by force.” Then Lord Kṛṣṇa, joined by Uddhava and Balarāma, spoke to Nanda in private. He said, “Dear father, if I go directly to Vraja today, leaving aside all these Vṛṣṇis, they will die from the pain of separation from Me. Then many thousands of enemies more powerful than even Keśī and Ariṣṭa will come to annihilate all these kings. “Since I am omniscient, I know what is inevitably going to happen to Me. Listen and I will describe it to you. After returning to Dvārakā, I will receive an invitation from Yudhiṣṭhira and will go to Indraprastha to participate in his Rājasūya sacrifice. There I will kill Śiśupāla, after which I will again return to Dvārakā and kill Śālva. Next I will travel to a place just south of Mathurā to save you by killing Dantavakra. I will then go back to Vraja, see all My old friends and again sit in your lap with great pleasure. Indeed, with great happiness I will spend the rest of My life with you. God has written this fate on My forehead, and it has been written on your foreheads that until the day I return you must tolerate separation from Me. Neither of our destinies can possibly be changed, so please find the courage to leave Me here for now and go home to Vraja. “And if, in the meantime, you, My dear parents, and you, My beloved friends, are distressed by the unavoidable fate written on our foreheads, then whenever you wish to feed Me some delicacy or play some game with Me or simply see Me, just close your eyes and I will appear before you to turn your torment into sky-flowers and fulfill all your desires. I promise you this, and the young friends of Mine whose lives I saved in a forest fire can vouch for it.” Convinced by all these arguments that his son’s happiness was of prime importance, Nanda accepted the gifts offered him and took his leave, accompanied by the Yadus’ large army.

After three months (tataḥ) Nanda went to the province of Mathurā. He went with the people of Vraja since they were all necessary for the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa there. He went because he expected Kṛṣṇa to come after he had killed the remaining enemies. In what manner did he depart? He was satisfied with all desirables given by Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma, Uddhava, Vasudeva, Ugrasena and the Yādavas. Though his real desires were not openly stated, he was completely satisfied by Kṛṣṇa’s promise. The desire of everyone was that Kṛṣṇa would immediately return to Gokula. That is also indicated by the plural of kamaiḥ. Yad-dhāmārtha-suhṛt-priyātma-tanaya-prāṇāśayās tvat-kṛte: so what is left for you to give these devotees of Vṛndāvana, whose homes, wealth, friends, dear relations, bodies, children and very lives and hearts are all dedicated only to you? SB 10.14.35 pṛṣṭāś cānāmayaṁ sveṣu prema-gadgadayā girā kṛṣṇe kamala-patrākṣe sannyastākhila-rādhasaḥ With voices faltering out of love for Him, those cowherds, who had dedicated everything to lotus-eyed Kṛṣṇa, asked about the health of their dear ones [in Dvārakā], and Balarāma in turn asked about the cowherds’ welfare. SB 10.65.6 They were dedicated solely to him, giving up everything else. Vasudeva and Ugrasena are mentioned first because they were best of the dynasty, being kings. Until this time, they had not arranged for Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma’s return to Vraja because of the disturbances caused by battles. Now they could arrange this. In this way they satisfied the people of Vraja. Kṛṣṇa along with Balarāma had promised to return after killing Kaṁsa. Now the time had come. Uddhava had advised them that they should quickly go on some pretext and stay there forever. Consulting with Uddhava, the two agreed. Or course the two also would reside eternally in Dvārakā where there is acknowledgement of Kṛṣṇa’s supreme position. Attention would be given to make this arrangement of returning to Vraja. Kṛṣṇa made a special arrangement for the gopīs. He himself as said in respect: api smaratha naḥ sakhyaḥ svānām artha-cikīrṣayā gatāṁś cirāyitāñ chatru- pakṣa-kṣapaṇa-cetasaḥ My dear girīfriends, do you still remember me? It was for my relatives’ sake that I stayed away so long, intent on destroying my enemies. SB 10.82.42 The destruction of enemies ended with the killing of Dantavakra. Vasudeva and others did not accept that even at this time Kṛṣṇa would go, since he had made them believe that he was absorbed in possessiveness of household life in Dvārakā. Nanda was also respected (pūryamanaḥ) with unlimited ornaments and other articles given. Accepting with affection that unlimited wealth (pāribarham), he left while Vasudeva and others followed after them (yāpitaḥ) for some time.

Having his desires fulfilled, he departed after three months. The desirable items are listed. Or having been satisfied with desireable, priceless ornaments etc. by Vasudeva, he departed. Or being satisfied with Vasudeva he departed. There were ornaments like crowns and earrings, silk cloth, utenstils made of bell metal for eating and milking cows, as well as vehicles. He departed with the servants, maids and cows (sa-vrajaḥ). He gave them instuctions individually. He went with his friends the cowherds and women who had come from Vraja (sa-bāndhavaḥ). Or filled with desire for Kṛṣṇa to return to Vraja, Nanda was satisfied that his desire had been fulfilled, that Kṛṣṇa would take his relatives to Dvārakā and with Balarāma come to Vraja, because Kṛṣṇa had made promises that this would happen. He gave this reassurance to the people of Vraja (sa-vrajaḥ). Moreover he was satisfied with the gifts, as acts of friendship. He accepted the gifts given by Kṛṣṇa and the Yadus, including Akrūra and Pradyumna (ādibhiḥ)-- out of affection for them alone. Nanda was sent off (yāpitaḥ). As a matter of respect, or out of affection, the Yadus accompanied them for some time. Or accompanied by the Yadus, Vasudeva and others for some distance, Nanda departed. He was sent off with promises that Kṛṣṇa would go to Vraja.
