एतन्नानाविधं विश्वमात्मसृष्टमधोक्षज । आत्मनानुप्रविश्यात्मन् प्राणो जीवो बिभर्ष्यज ॥ ५ ॥

etan nānā-vidhaṁ viśvam ātma-sṛṣṭam adhokṣaja ātmanānupraviśyātman prāṇo jīvo bibharṣy aja

Translation

O transcendental Lord, from Yourself You created this entire variegated universe, and then You entered within it in Your personal form as the Supersoul. In this way, O unborn Supreme Soul, as the life force and consciousness of everyone, You maintain the creation.

O transcendental Lord, from Yourself You created this entire variegated universe, and then You entered within it in Your personal form as the Supersoul. In this way, O unborn Supreme Soul, as the life force and consciousness of everyone, You maintain the creation. KB 10.85.5 “Therefore, You are beyond the perception of our senses. You are the Supreme Soul, unborn and unchanging. You are not affected by the six kinds of transformations which occur in the material body. The wonderful varieties of this material world are also created by You, and You have entered as the Supersoul into all of them, down to the atom. You are the vital force of all these manifestations and also their supreme cognition. As such, You are the maintainer of everything.

Purport

When creating the material universe, the Lord expands Himself as the Paramātmā, or Supersoul, and accepts the creation as His universal body. No material body has any reason for existing without some jīva soul desiring it for his enjoyment, and no jīva can independently maintain a body without the Paramātmā accompanying him there for guidance. The Vaiṣṇava ācāryas, in their commentaries on the Second Canto of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, explain that even before Brahmā is born from the lotus navel of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, he first accepts the whole material energy, the mahat-tattva, as his body. Thus Brahmā is the jīva embodied by the universe, and Viṣṇu is the Paramātmā who joins him. Brahmā must organize the specific manifestations of creation, but he cannot begin to do so until Lord Viṣṇu expands Himself again into the subtle energy of action — which is the sūtra-tattva, or original vital air — and also into the creative energy of consciousness, buddhi-tattva.

Morever you are the maintainer of this universe. O supersoul (atma), entering in the form of paramatma (atmana), as the sutra element made of kriya sakti (pranah) and buddhi element made of jnana sakti (jivah), you nourish the universe in the form of or prana and buddhi , or the action and knowledge gathering senses.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

This verse expands on the previous verse. This universe is created in you (yatra of previous verse), and by you (yena). It is created because of you (yataḥ) and belongs to you (yasya) and is non-different from you (yad yat). The creation is for him (yasmai), as part of his creation pastime. All this is expressed by the phrase ātma-sṛṣṭam. You are the shelter of the prāṇa (kriyā-śakti) and jīva (jñāna-śakti). This indicates the method of creation (yathā). The kriya-śakti in the form of time indicates the time of creation (yaḍā). You are the supreme shelter of everything (adhokṣaja). You are Svayam Bhagavān (aja).

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

This can be directly seen. There is variety in the creation: beings born from wombs etc. or various species, or big and small or with mixtures of the three guṇas. The universe is created by you alone (ātma-śṛṣṭam). Entering the universe after creation (anu), you maintain it by yourself (ātmanā). You do not depend on others. That is suitable since you have created it. In what form do you enter? O supreme ātma, antaryāmī (āṭman)! You cannot be known by anyone. O Lord beyond the senses (adhokṣaja)! This is because you are not born like others (aja). You manifest by yourself. Or you maintain the universe in yourself (ātman). You alone are the shelter of the universe. Or though manifested externally, you appear internally as well. You enter into it and support it though you are present beneath the cart in your childhood pastimes (adhokṣaja), because you are the maintainer of the bodies in the universe (prāṇaḥ) and give life to everything (jīvaḥ). Thus you are the dearest. O dearest (ātman). Thus you manifest without effort (aja).
