कृष्णस्तु गृहकृत्येषु व्यग्रायां मातरि प्रभु: । अद्राक्षीदर्जुनौ पूर्वं गुह्यकौ धनदात्मजौ ॥ २२ ॥

kṛṣṇas tu gṛha-kṛtyeṣu vyagrāyāṁ mātari prabhuḥ adrākṣīd arjunau pūrvaṁ guhyakau dhanadātmajau

Synonyms

kṛṣṇaḥ tu in the meantime ; gṛha kṛtyeṣu — in engagement in household affairs ; vyagrāyām very busy ; mātari when His mother ; prabhuḥ the Lord ; adrākṣīt observed ; arjunau the twin arjuna trees ; pūrvam before Him ; guhyakau which in a former millennium had been demigods ; dhanada ātmajau — the sons of Kuvera, the treasurer of the demigods .

Translation

While mother Yaśodā was very busy with household affairs, the Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, observed twin trees known as yamala-arjuna, which in a former millennium had been the demigod sons of Kuvera.

While mother Yaśodā was very busy with household affairs, the Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, observed twin trees known as yamala-arjuna, which in a former millennium had been the demigod sons of Kuvera. KB 10.9.22 After binding her son, Mother Yaśodā engaged herself in household affairs. At that time, bound up to the wooden mortar, Kṛṣṇa could see a pair of trees before Him which were known as arjuna trees. The great reservoir of pleasure, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, thus thought to Himself, “Mother Yaśodā first of all left without feeding Me sufficient milk, and therefore I broke the pot of yogurt and distributed the stock butter in charity to the monkeys. Now she has bound Me up to a wooden mortar. So I shall do something more mischievous than before.” And thus He thought of pulling down the two very tall arjuna trees. There is a history behind the pair of arjuna trees. In their previous lives they had been the sons of Kuvera, and their names were Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva. Fortunately, they later came within the vision of the Lord.

Though he is exclusively the son of Yaśodā, another incident is narrated to show that he possesses unrestricted knowledge and other powers. Yaśodā bound Kṛṣṇa and he freed others from bondage. The word tu indicates a change of subject. Yaśodā was engaged in constant work (indicated by the plural of “household chores”). She left him and went away since he was in the yard nearby, and as will be mentioned later, other boys stayed there to protect him. She had no worry that he would go elsewhere since she did not think he had the power to pull the mortar or to free himself from the tight knots. Viṣṇu Purāṇa says yadi śakonṣi gaccha tvam aticañcala-ceṣṭhitaḥ: if you can, please go, boy with fickle actions!

Prabhuḥ indicates he was now independent in action or that he was capable of delivering the world, because he was directly bhagavān (krṣṇaḥ). Seeing the two trees, he desired to give them mercy
