Translation
Sūta Gosvāmī said: Having spoken thus, Lord Śaṅkara — the shelter of pure souls, master of all spiritual sciences and controller of all embodied living beings — approached the sage.
Translation (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
Sūta Gosvāmī said: Having spoken thus, Śiva—the shelter of the devotees, master of all types of knowledge and controller of all embodied living beings—approached the sage.
Śiva is called the shelter of the devotees because he gives bhakti which they desire. He is not only the shelter of the devotees, but of those with material desires: he is lord of all types of knowledge. This is not at all astonishing since he is the lord of all beings (īśvaraḥ).
