स विश्वस्तैजस: प्राज्ञस्तुरीय इति वृत्तिभि: । अर्थेन्द्रियाशयज्ञानैर्भगवान् परिभाव्यते ॥ २२ ॥

sa viśvas taijasaḥ prājṣas turīya iti vṛttibhiḥ arthendriyāśaya-jṣānair bhagavān paribhāvyate

Synonyms

saḥ He ; viśvaḥ taijasaḥ prājṣaḥ the manifestations of waking consciousness, sleep and deep sleep ; turīyaḥ the fourth, transcendental stage ; iti thus termed ; vṛttibhiḥ by the functions ; artha by the external objects of perception ; indriya the mind ; āśaya covered consciousness ; jṣānaiḥ and spiritual knowledge ; bhagavān the Personality of Godhead ; paribhāvyate is conceived of .

Translation

One can conceive of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in terms of awakened consciousness, sleep and deep sleep — which function respectively through external objects, the mind and material intelligence — and also in terms of the fourth, transcendental level of consciousness, which is characterized by pure knowledge.

One can conceive of the Supreme Lord in terms of awakened consciousness, dreaming, deep sleep, and spiritual consciousness, by knowledge gained through external objects, the senses and the mind. This explains the vibhūtis of the catur-vyūha. The senses and mind are endowed with impressions. “I slept happily. I was not even aware of happiness.” In this example even in deep sleep there is ignorance and knowledge (caused by impressions of the mind and senses). By knowledge through the senses, mind and objects, in the states of waking, sleeping, deep sleep and the fourth state, the Lord is remembered. The four states are vibhūtis of the catur-vyūha. Vāsudeva represents the waking state. Saṅkarṣaṇa represents dreaming. Pradyumna represents deep sleep. Aniruddha represents the fourth state of knowledge.
